This 2006 Jeep Liberty KJ factory service manual is DaimlerChrysler document 81-370-06060. Written for professional automotive technicians involved in daily repair operations, the manual assumes trade-level knowledge, proper shop equipment, scan-tool access, and the specified service tools.
Service work covered here includes heavy assemblies, pressurized diesel fuel, brake hydraulics, refrigerant, and pyrotechnic restraint components. Follow the manual's vehicle-support, battery-isolation, pressure-relief, and restraint-system safety requirements before beginning repair work.
Coverage and Factory Procedures
-
Document and model coverage: A 6,064-page PDF set consisting of the 6,059-page service manual, four pages of front matter, and a one-page CD welcome screen. VIN decoding identifies Liberty 4x2 LHD and Liberty 4x4 LHD without ABB, plus Cherokee 4x4 RHD and Cherokee LHD with ABB. Series codes distinguish Liberty/Renegade, Liberty Sport, and Liberty Limited, with corresponding Cherokee Sport and Limited designations.
-
Engine, fuel, and emissions: Dedicated 3.7L gasoline and 2.8L diesel chapters cover engine removal and installation, cylinder heads and camshafts, crankshaft and bearing work, piston and connecting-rod service, lubrication systems, and valve-timing components. Fuel sections address 3.7L delivery and injection as well as the 2.8L common-rail pump, rail, injectors, sensors, turbocharger, charge-air plumbing, EGR, and gasoline EVAP/NVLD systems.
-
Transmission and four-wheel drive: The NSG370 manual transmission, 42RLE automatic, diesel 545RFE automatic, and NV231, NV241 GENII, and NV242 transfer cases receive separate diagnosis, removal, disassembly, inspection, assembly, installation, and specification coverage. The automatic-transmission chapters also include hydraulic and clutch air-pressure testing, valve-body and clutch-pack repair, end-play checks, and verification tests.
-
Axles, suspension, steering, and brakes: Coverage extends to the 186FIA front axle, 8 1/4 rear axle, propeller shafts, half shafts and CV joints, differential bearing preload, pinion depth, backlash, and gear-contact adjustment. Suspension and steering sections cover alignment, hubs, ball joints, control arms, springs, steering gear, linkage, pump testing, and bleeding. Base-brake service is paired with ABS/ESP fault diagnosis, HCU service, scan-tool bleeding, sensor calibration, and final verification.
-
Electrical diagnostics and diagrams: DTC-based test trees cover gasoline and diesel engine controls, automatic transmissions, ABS, restraints, the instrument cluster, body and control modules, lighting, power accessories, theft security, and communication faults. Factory diagram sets include 8W-10 Power Distribution, 8W-30 Fuel/Ignition System, 8W-80 Connector Pin-Outs, and 8W-91 Connector/Ground/Splice Location. The drivetrain chapters add 42RLE schematics with and without variable line pressure and separate 545RFE hydraulic schematics.
-
Body, structure, and HVAC: Body repair information covers doors, swing gate, glass, sunroof, trim, seats, and instrument-panel removal. The body-structure section provides weld and structural-adhesive locations, sealer maps, opening dimensions, and gap-and-flush data. HVAC material includes system diagnosis, A/C compressor and clutch service, refrigerant recovery and charging, leak testing, evaporator and heater-core work, controls, actuators, and diesel coolant-heater service.
Diagnostic Depth and Shop Data
The manual combines symptom charts with circuit-by-circuit tests, DTC conditions, connector views, component locations, and post-repair verification. Scan-tool-dependent procedures include PCM/SKREEM and diesel PCM/ECM/SKIM programming, ignition-key programming, ABS/ESP initialization, and cycling the hydraulic control unit during ABS bleeding. Specification sections supply component torque tables, approved fluids and capacities, pressure-test data, electrical test values, clearances, wear limits, and alignment settings.
Special-tool plates identify the exact equipment used in major repairs. Examples include 3.7L Engine Lifting Fixture 8427, Camshaft Holder 8428, and Chain Tensioner Wedge 8379; diesel camshaft alignment pins VM.1052/VM.1053, TDC locating pin VM.1081, and timing-belt tensioner wrench VM.9660; Pinion Depth Set 6774; and transmission End Play Set 8266.
On the 3.7L engine, the structural cover has a required torque sequence; ignoring it can severely damage the cover. In the axle sections, loosening the pinion nut to reduce bearing preload or overcrushing the collapsible spacer can damage the pinion setup.
The VIN and general-service material identify a 2.4L gasoline engine code and include selected 2.4L references. However, the dedicated internal-engine, fuel-system, and powertrain-diagnostic chapters are centered on the 3.7L gasoline and 2.8L diesel engines. A complete 2.4L engine-overhaul chapter is not included. Equipment operation and feature-use instructions belong to the separate owner's manual, not this service publication.
