Owner Operations and System Coverage

This owner’s manual is suited to CX-9 owners with basic mechanical ability and ordinary hand tools for the limited inspections and maintenance Mazda assigns to the owner; technicians can also use it to confirm factory operating logic and driver-facing warning behavior. It is explicitly not a technician’s repair manual.

The Advanced Key section goes well beyond button identification. It maps the operating areas for door, liftgate, and start functions; explains low- or dead-battery behavior; identifies the CR2025 replacement battery; and covers auxiliary-key use, forced starting, warning-beep conditions, and restoration of a temporarily suspended key. It does not provide replacement-key registration or immobilizer programming—additional or lost keys are directed to an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

Factory illustrations include Interior Equipment Views A–C and front/rear Exterior Overviews for locating controls, advanced-key operating-area drawings, SRS component and deployment-condition views, engine-compartment and fuse-panel layouts, and rear-view monitor display-range diagrams. These are operating and identification illustrations rather than workshop exploded views or electrical schematics.

Technical Specifications and Safety Logic

The SRS material explains front, side, and curtain air-bag operation, roll-over protection, driver-seat position sensing, passenger-seat weight classification, buckle-switch input, pretensioner behavior, and the passenger-air-bag deactivation indicator. It also distinguishes steady, flashing, and non-illuminating air-bag/pretensioner warning-light conditions and the related warning beep.

One repair boundary matters around the front seats: changing upholstery, loosening seat hardware, removing the seats, or disturbing SRS wiring can damage the passenger weight sensors or cause accidental deployment. The manual directs that work, along with service around the dashboard, steering wheel, pillars, and roof-edge air-bag components, to an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

The specifications identify the 3.7-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 and provide lubricant classifications, fluid capacities, 2WD-versus-AWD weight ratings, tire and inflation data, exterior and interior bulb types, and advanced-key personalization options. The climate section identifies HFC134a (R-134a) refrigerant, but it does not provide an A/C charge quantity or a refrigerant repair procedure.

Maintenance, Emergency Procedures, and Scope

Scheduled-maintenance tables are separated for the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico versus Mexico, with normal and severe-use schedules. Owner-maintenance coverage includes oil and coolant checks, brake and power-steering fluid, washer fluid, wiper blades, the battery, tires, bulbs, and fuses. Emergency chapters add spare-tire use, wheel changing, overheating response, jump-starting, tiedown points, and commercial or recreational towing.

The towing instructions make an important 2WD/AWD distinction: an AWD CX-9 must be transported with all four wheels off the ground to avoid drivetrain damage, and the tiedown eyelets are not towing hooks. That warning can prevent an emergency recovery from turning into a transaxle or driveline repair.

Navigation-system operation, full component repair and overhaul procedures, connector-level troubleshooting, and vehicle wiring diagrams are not part of this PDF. Mazda lists the 2011 Workshop Manual, Wiring Diagram, Service Highlights, and Navigation System Owner’s Manual as separate publications. SRS work, refrigerant service, and major mechanical repair require the appropriate service information and qualified procedures beyond this owner-level manual.
