Jeep Manual Features & Content Preview

This factory service manual set is specific to the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is organized by OEM system group and goes well beyond a general maintenance guide, with diagnosis, testing, adjustment, removal, installation, disassembly, assembly, and repair information for the configurations identified in the publication.

  • Vehicle identification and coverage: Distinguishes WK Grand Cherokee 4x2 and 4x4 models, WH export 4x4 models in left- and right-hand drive, and the Laredo and Limited series. The VIN data lists 3.7L V6, 4.7L V8, 5.7L HEMI Multiple Displacement V8, and 3.0L turbo-diesel vehicle applications.
  • Gasoline engine repair: Section 9 covers the 3.7L, 4.7L, and 5.7L engines, including engine removal and installation, compression and leakage diagnosis, cylinder heads and valvetrain, crankshaft and piston service, lubrication-system testing, manifolds, and timing-system work.
  • Transmission and transfer-case service: Covers 545RFE and NAG1 electrical diagnosis and internal repair, with road testing, hydraulic pressure tests, clutch air checks, teardown, inspection, reassembly, clutch and planetary sections, pumps, valve bodies or electrohydraulic controls, and torque-converter service. NV140 and NV245 chapters include internal service, fluid procedures, output seals, and NV245 shift-motor/mode-sensor coverage.
  • Axles, chassis, steering, and brakes: Separates C200F/C200FE front axles and C213R/C213RE rear axles, including electronic limited-slip differential and Vari-Lok sections, ring-and-pinion setup, bearing preload, backlash, contact-pattern checks, half-shaft and CV-joint repair, suspension service, steering flow/pressure diagnosis, base brakes, ABS, traction control, and ESP.
  • Electrical diagnosis and programming: Includes CAN B and CAN C network fault isolation, module no-response tests, DTC-based diagnostic trees, connector and circuit testing, PCM/SKREEM and ignition-key programming, transmission adaptation and learn procedures, and ESP sensor calibration.
  • Body, HVAC, and equipment systems: Provides repair information for body panels and closures, glass, seats, restraints, lighting, wipers, power accessories, audio/video, navigation and hands-free equipment, park assist, theft security, plus manual and automatic climate-control diagnosis and refrigerant-system service.

Model-Year and Engine Scope

This is a 2005-only service manual set; it is not blanket documentation for the 2006–2010 WK production run. The application data explicitly identifies Laredo and Limited. Later-model SRT8 powertrain, suspension, brake, and body sections are not part of this publication.

The 3.0L turbo-diesel appears in the VIN/application information and in diesel-specific cooling and selected electronic or transmission references. However, the full engine-mechanical repair chapters in this set are for the 3.7L, 4.7L, and 5.7L gasoline engines. A complete internal 3.0L diesel overhaul chapter is not included.

Factory Diagnostic and Repair Depth

The 545RFE section includes hydraulic schematics, pressure-test locations, clutch operation checks, clutch-pack and planetary repair, oil-pump inspection, solenoid/TRS service, and valve-body teardown. The NAG1 section covers mechanical power flow, emergency-running operation, input and holding clutches, the electrohydraulic control unit, planetary geartrain, solenoids, sensors, and internal disassembly and assembly. Final Drive Control Module information connects active transfer-case operation with front and rear electronic limited-slip differential control.

Brake coverage separates base-brake repair from ABS, traction-control, and ESP diagnosis. It includes manual, pressure, master-cylinder, and ABS bleeding procedures, wheel-speed and dynamics-sensor diagnosis, active-brake-booster information, and ESP sensor calibration.

Wiring, Diagrams, and Reference Data

Representative drawing sets include 545RFE Hydraulic Schematics, Anti-Lock Brake TCS/ESP circuit diagrams, Bus Communications, Transmission Control System, Air Conditioning/Heater, and Connector/Ground/Splice Location views. Section 8W also supplies connector pinouts, component indexing, power and ground distribution, splice information, and circuit-specific wiring for starting, fuel/ignition, airbags, lighting, trailer tow, power accessories, audio/video, and navigation.

Factory reference material includes component-specific torque specifications, fluid capacities and approved-fluid information, clearance and wear data, pressure and electrical test specifications, DTC and component indexes, and special-tool callouts. Examples include the W-129-B differential case spreader with 9669 adapters and C-3281 flange-holding tooling.

Two cautions show why the factory procedures matter: the steering control module/clockspring must remain centered after related column or steering-shaft work or its internal tape can be damaged. During axle repair, incorrect pinion-preload handling can damage the collapsible spacer and bearings.

Review the manual’s factory safety procedures, supplemental-restraint precautions, vehicle-support requirements, and brake or pressure-system warnings before beginning major diagnosis or teardown.
