Engine, Drivetrain, and Chassis Repair
The service-manual volume covers routine maintenance as well as full Twin Cam 88B repair. It maps the lubrication system before moving into engine removal, top-end overhaul, and bottom-end disassembly and reassembly. Coverage reaches the rocker-arm support plate, pushrods and lifters, heads and valves, cylinders and pistons, connecting-rod bushings, cam support plate and cam bearings, oil pump, crankcase bearings, flywheel, and balance-shaft assembly. Fuel-System and Electrical Diagnosis
Carbureted coverage includes C.V. carburetor removal and internal service, float and accelerator-pump inspection, enrichener adjustment, the vacuum-operated fuel valve and filter, fuel tank, air cleaner, model-specific exhaust systems, and California evaporative-emissions components. EFI coverage is separate and follows the ECM, induction module, throttle-position, intake-air-temperature, engine-temperature and MAP sensors, idle-air control, injectors, fuel pump/sender, and fuel-pressure testing. Scanalyzer-based EFI idle adjustment is documented as its own factory procedure.
Electrical Diagnostics P/N 99495-01 adds starter current-draw and solenoid checks, stator and regulator output testing, battery load testing, fuel-gauge and speedometer diagnosis, indicator-lamp checks, and TSM/TSSM security setup and password learning. Its carbureted and EFI engine-management flowcharts address no-start conditions, check-engine or security lamps, misfire, sensor and injector faults, serial-data loss, and intermittent harness problems. Factory methods reference the HD-41325 Scanalyzer, HD-39978 DVOM, HD-42682 ignition-module breakout box, and HD-43876 EFI breakout box.
Diagrams, Specifications, and Scope
Useful visual references include Front Fork: FLSTS (FXSTS Similar), Mainshaft/Countershaft Assembly, and Initial Diagnostic Check: EFI, plus connector-location views and carbureted/EFI main-harness, ignition, charging, lighting, instrument, starting, and security schematics. The wiring section contains nine carbureted and twelve EFI sheets for domestic and international models.
Specifications appear at the point of use and in dedicated tables: torque values, fluid capacities and approved lubricants, component dimensions, service-wear limits, runout and alignment data, electrical voltage/resistance/current tests, fuel-pressure tests, adjustment data, and special-tool part numbers. This is a 2001 service and diagnostics set, not a replacement parts catalog or owner’s handbook; replacement part selection and later service bulletins are separate.
The manual also calls out damage-sensitive repair points. Incorrect balance-chain indexing, housing preparation, or retention-pin condition can damage the engine, while operating a brake control with a wheel removed can force the pistons out and require caliper disassembly. Secure the motorcycle on a stable lift or stand before major repair work, and follow the fuel, battery, spring-pressure, brake, and lifting warnings.
