Harley-Davidson Manual Features & Content Preview

This 653-page PDF contains the 2007 Harley-Davidson Softail factory service manual, P/N 99482-07, for the 96 cu. in. (1584cc) air-cooled, fuel-injected, counterbalanced V-twin platform. Coverage is keyed to the factory VIN tables for FLSTC, FLSTSC, FLSTF, FLSTN, FXST, FXSTB, FXSTC, and FXSTD, including FLSTC and FLSTF Shrine codes. That lineup spans the Heritage Softail Classic, Softail Springer Classic, Fat Boy, Softail Deluxe, Softail Standard, Night Train, Softail Custom, and Softail Deuce.

  • Engine and counterbalancer repair covers engine removal and installation, complete top- and bottom-end overhaul, cylinder-head and valve service, cam support plate and camshafts, oil pump and crankcase work, flywheel/connecting-rod inspection, and balance-chain timing.
  • Model-specific chassis chapters separate the FLSTSC Springer fork, rocker, steering-head, wheel, and brake procedures from the hydraulic-fork models, with further FXSTD-specific wheel and front-end instructions. They also cover master-cylinder and caliper overhaul, sealed wheel bearings, laced-wheel assembly and truing, rim runout, and vehicle alignment.
  • Primary-drive and six-speed transmission sections detail chaincase removal, automatic tensioner and compensating-sprocket service, clutch-pack inspection and teardown, final-drive sprocket and belt replacement, shifter-linkage adjustment, gearset disassembly, side-door bearings, main-drive-gear service, and case assembly.
  • Fuel-system and emissions work spans the induction module, IAC, MAP, IAT and engine-temperature sensors, oxygen sensors, injectors, in-tank fuel pump/gauge sender, fuel-pressure and intake-leak testing, California EVAP equipment, the HDI air-cleaner backplate, and active-exhaust hardware.
  • Electrical repair material handles the ECM, crank-position sensor, ignition coil, starter and solenoid, alternator and regulator, battery testing, TSM/TSSM/HFSM service, lighting and instruments, handlebar switches, main-harness removal, connector-terminal repair, crimping, and sealed splices.
  • Factory reference data covers maintenance schedules, model-specific torque tables, fluid and lubricant information, tire-fitment and pressure charts, service-wear limits, adjustment specifications, battery and starter test data, connector locations, wire-color codes, and specialty-tool requirements.

Inside the Manual

Eight numbered sections separate Maintenance, Chassis, Engine, Fuel System, Electric Starter, Drive, Transmission, and Electrical work; appendices cover tools, wiring, metric conversions, and glossary terms.

Maintenance coverage carries routine service into brake bleeding, pad replacement, clutch and throttle-cable adjustment, rear-belt deflection and wear analysis, steering-head fall-away, FLSTSC rocker-bearing inspection, fork-oil replacement, headlamp alignment, storage, and symptom-based troubleshooting. Separate chapters document both laced-wheel configurations, while model splits continue through wheel, brake, fork, fender, handlebar, seat, saddlebag, fuel-tank, and exhaust procedures. The FLSTSC and FXSTD are not treated as generic Softails.

The engine chapter is built for actual overhaul work. It covers compression and cylinder-leakage testing, oil-pressure checks, valve-train and oil-consumption diagnosis, cylinder-head inspection with guide replacement and seat refacing, cylinder deglazing, boring and honing, piston and ring service, cam needle bearings, crankshaft bearings, hydraulic counterbalancer tensioners, and oil-flow diagnosis. The drive and transmission chapters go just as deep: clutch-pack disassembly, transmission removal, shaft and gear inspection, bearing replacement, and final assembly checks.

Diagrams, Wiring, and Tools

Appendix B provides 11 model-year wiring diagrams plus terminal removal and installation, crimp inspection, sealed-splice repair, connector locations, wire-color codes, and schematic symbols for AMP, Delphi, Deutsch, Metri-Pack, Packard, and Molex systems. Named illustrations include Engine Oil Flow: Cam Support Plate/Right Crankcase Half, EFI System Circuit, Transmission Power Flow, the three-sheet 2007 All Softail Main Harness, Starting Circuit, and the two-sheet Security Circuit.

Required specialty tools are called out where they are used and collected in Appendix A. Examples include the HD-44060A wheel-bearing installer/remover, HD-47255 Springer steering-stem bearing tool, HD-48615 balancer-shaft sprocket alignment tool, and HD-35316-C main-drive-gear remover/installer.

Scope and Shop Notes

The service manual contains wiring diagrams and component-level electrical repair, but it directs check-engine diagnosis and many sensor-function tests to the separate Softail Models Electrical Diagnostic Manual. That companion publication and the parts catalog are not part of this PDF.

On the FLSTSC, the Springer steering-head tool is for adjustment only; using it to seat the upper retainer can bend its pins. The rear-wheel chapter also requires new sprocket fasteners because reused screws can lose torque and damage the sprocket or belt.

The manual's lifting and support warnings apply directly to engine, fork, wheel, brake, and rear-fork repair: the motorcycle must be securely supported under the frame on a suitable lift or stand before heavy or structural components are removed.
