Engine Tests and Model-Specific Shop Notes

Engine diagnosis. Compression, cylinder leakage, and oil-pressure tests help narrow down the cause before teardown. The overhaul section covers valve-guide replacement and seat refacing, cylinder boring and honing, piston and ring service, cam and crankshaft bearings, and hydraulic counterbalancer tensioners. Oil-flow illustrations trace passages through the cam support plate and right crankcase half.

Springer and rear-wheel service. The FLSTSC steering-head adjustment tool is for adjustment only. Using it to seat the upper retainer can bend the tool pins. The rear-wheel procedure calls for new sprocket mounting screws because reused screws can lose clamping torque. The manual specifies secure frame support for work involving heavy or structural components.

Wiring Diagrams, Connector Repair, and Special Tools

Tracing circuits. Appendix B indexes 11 wiring diagram sheets for domestic and international models, including the three-sheet main harness, starting and charging circuits, and two-sheet security circuit. It gives connector locations, schematic symbols, wire-color codes, terminal removal and installation, crimp inspection, and sealed-splice procedures for AMP, Delphi, Deutsch, Metri-Pack, Packard, and Molex connectors. The fuel and transmission chapters also include EFI circuit and transmission power-flow illustrations.

Diagnostic scope. For check-engine troubleshooting and many sensor-function tests, the service manual directs readers to the separate Softail Models Electrical Diagnostic Manual. That publication and the parts catalog are sold separately from this PDF.

Special tools. Appendix A lists tools such as the HD-44060A wheel-bearing installer/remover, HD-47255 Springer steering-stem bearing tool, HD-48615 balancer-shaft sprocket alignment tool, and HD-35316-C main-drive-gear remover/installer.

Brake Wear and Cylinder Leakage Examples

Brake pad wear. The front pads on the FLSTSC have a replacement threshold of 0.06 in. (1.6 mm) of friction material above the backing plate. For the other pads covered by the inspection, the threshold is 0.04 in. (1.02 mm).

Cylinder leakage. The engine chapter treats leakage greater than 10% as a sign of an internal engine problem and describes how to locate escaping air. The manual excludes engines with automatic compression release from this test procedure.
