Serial Breaks and Component Selection

Serial-specific sections help match replacement parts and repair procedures to the machine's build. Transaxle, brake, hydraulic-line, and electrical arrangements split at 410D SN -796854 / 796855- and 510D SN -796890 / 796891-.

At SN -801199 / 801200-, repair chapters distinguish front axle pivot hardware and shimming, counterweights, heater/blower motors, hydraulic reservoirs, priority/loader valves, and selected cylinders. The specifications also distinguish alternators, transmission/torque-converter arrangements, tires, and travel data.

Backhoe valve procedures separate Gresen SN -796033 from Husco SN 796034-. Extendible-dipperstick construction changes at SN 787385, while extension-cylinder procedures change at SN 787396. These sections distinguish seals, support pads, bearing strips, bushings, and linkage arrangements.

Axle and Transmission Overhaul

Axle and transaxle procedures cover bearing preload, backlash, end play, and rolling drag. Separate APL-745 and APL-2035 sections address MFWD hub, knuckle, differential, and pinion construction.

Early and late transaxle procedures cover shifter shafts, clutch packs, differential lock, lube pumps, and the park-brake shaft. Reverser work includes the oil pump, planetary assembly, forward clutch, reverse brake, shift linkage, and hydraulic control valves.

The torque converter has no internal service parts and is replaced as an assembly. The installation instructions warn that excessive insertion into the reverser housing can damage the input-shaft seal.

Engine Removal and Auxiliary Systems

Cooling procedures cover the radiator, oil cooler, fan, and belt-tension adjustment. Other auxiliary sections address cold-weather starting aids, speed-control linkage, air-cleaner disassembly, and early and late fuel-tank removal.

Loader, Backhoe, and Main Hydraulics

Valve chapters distinguish early and late loader valves, Gresen and Husco backhoe valves, stabilizer valves, and the selective-flow solenoid valve. They cover relief and anti-cavitation valves and linkage adjustment.

Cylinder repair distinguishes the 410D Standard Lift from 410D Heavy Lift/510D crowd and boom assemblies, with separate swing, stabilizer, bucket, and extension-cylinder sections.

Main hydraulic coverage includes charge-pump and main-pump removal, reservoirs, filters, coolers, priority valves, and pressure-compensator components. Complete radial-piston-pump repair requires CTM7.

The stroke-control-housing instructions caution against missing cap-screw shims and overtightening, which can damage the housing.

Brake Repair Beyond Disk Replacement

The brake chapters include reclaiming and polishing transaxle-case braking surfaces, cleaning out machining contamination, and pressure-testing the brake pressure plate. Park-brake coverage includes the band, actuator, linkage, and controls.

Electrical Connections and Air Conditioning

Electrical service covers FNR, MFWD, park-brake, reverse-alarm, and return-to-dig switches and solenoids, plus restriction switches and serial-specific starting motors. Alternator and starting-motor component repair is covered in CTM77.

Safety note: Support raised loader and backhoe structures and the machine frame with approved stands, relieve hydraulic pressure before opening lines, and use rated lifting equipment for axles, transmission, cab, or ROPS work. The park-brake actuator contains a spring under load and must not be treated as an ordinary serviceable canister.

Transaxle End Play and Backlash: A Preview

For the 410D SN 796855- and 510D SN 796891-, the second-speed gear end-play check specifies a minimum of 0.07 mm (0.003 in.).

The differential backlash adjustment for those machines specifies 0.18 ± 0.04 mm (0.007 ± 0.0015 in.) between the spiral bevel gear and bevel pinion, with dial-indicator checks and bearing-quill shim adjustment.
