The engine chapter treats the liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four as a complete assembly. It covers engine removal, camshafts, timing chain and tensioner, cylinder head, valves, valve guides and seats, generator and pickup-coil components, clutch, starter clutch, shift shaft, oil pan, oil pump, crankcase, connecting rods, pistons, crankshaft, bearings, shift drum, shift forks, and the six-speed transmission. Repair Cautions and Coverage Limits
Valve-clearance work requires the timing chain to be secured, the chain opening covered, and each lifter and valve pad kept in its original location; a dropped pad can fall into the crankcase, while mixed parts invalidate the adjustment. When installing wheel bearings, force is applied only through the outer race so the new bearing is not damaged before the wheel returns to service. The EXUP servomotor test must remain brief because leaving battery power connected for more than a few seconds can damage the motor.
This is the 2001 base service manual, not a blanket manual for later FZS1000 revisions. Motorcycle repair at this level can expose hot coolant, brake fluid, stored spring or gas pressure, and live electrical circuits. Support the motorcycle securely before wheel, fork, engine, or suspension work, disconnect the negative battery lead before electrical teardown, and never open the cooling system while it is hot.
