Coverage and Build Identification
The front matter decodes Ford identification-plate and production-date information for the tractor, engine, transmission, rear axle, hydraulic pump, and hydraulic lift. Part introductions separate early and late builds rather than treating every machine as identical. The fuel section changes from 1975–11/81 231/531/340/540/445/545 applications to the 12/81-on 230A/530A/340A/540A/445/545 group, while the transmission matrix uses a 9/81 changeover. Transmission chapters are separate for six-speed, 8-speed non-synchromesh, 8-speed synchromesh, 6 x 4 manual-reversing, power-reversing, and revised 4 x 4 torque-converter-drive units. Power-reversing coverage also distinguishes the 1975–3/81 blocker-valve system from the 4/81-on modulator-valve design.
The later material has a limited, clearly defined scope. Rev. 9/86 adds the 4 x 4 torque-converter-drive synchromesh transmission for 340B, 540B, 445A, and 545A models, along with front-wheel-drive axle, front gearbox, transfer-case, driveshaft, and toe-in service for the 445A and 545A. Bulletin 2-86 corrects diesel wiring for flat-top and round-fender configurations, including return-to-dig and transmission-dump circuits. These updates do not provide full B-series repair coverage. The book covers the tractor power unit and chassis, not complete loader or backhoe attachment overhaul.
Factory Repair Depth
Engine chapters cover cylinder-head rebuilding, valve seats and guides, rocker shafts, timing gears, oil-pump overhaul, pistons and connecting rods, cylinder-block inspection, main bearings, flywheel, crankshaft, camshaft, radiator, thermostat, and water-pump repair. Diesel sections explain injection-pump operation and timing, speed and throttle-linkage adjustment, bleeding, thermostart, filters, and lines. Injector overhaul includes opening-pressure, spray-pattern, seat-leakage, and leak-back testing. Internal injection-pump calibration remains a test-stand operation rather than an in-tractor overhaul procedure. Gasoline coverage includes carburetor adjustment, complete carburetor disassembly and inspection, float setting, fuel-pump repair, and troubleshooting.
The drivetrain and chassis sections provide removal, disassembly, inspection, reassembly, adjustment, and operational testing for the covered clutches, transmissions, PTO units, rear axles, brakes, steering systems, front axles, and hydraulics. Tractor splitting is documented at the transmission-to-rear-axle, engine-to-transmission, and engine-to-front-axle joints for the two main model groups.
Diagrams, Specifications, and Shop Notes
Problem/cause/remedy charts span engine, fuel, electrical, power-reversing transmission, steering, and hydraulic faults. Water-pump repair is split at engine date code 1C23 (3/23/81) because the seal, bearing, and tooling differ. The clutch chapter warns that uneven pressure-plate bolt release can distort the cover. In the hydrostatic steering unit, the spool and housing, commutator pair, and rotor/stator are matched sets; mixing parts or nicking the lapped faces can cause binding.
Tractor separation, axle removal, clutch work, injector testing, and hydraulic pressure testing involve heavy supported assemblies, stored spring loads, and high-pressure fluid. Use the stands, guards, service tools, and test equipment specified for the job.
