1980 Briggs & Stratton One-Cylinder Engine OEM Service Manual (GSS-1441-2)

International Harvester publication GSS-1441-2 with Revision 1 (March 1980) covers engine, fuel and electrical service for Briggs & Stratton single-cylinder engines used in IH outdoor power equipment. Engine Repair and Inspection Limits

Internal inspection covers pistons, rings and connecting rods, crankshaft bearings and journals, camshaft wear, and crankcase breather assemblies. Specification tables include cylinder bore limits, piston ring gaps, valve seat angles and valve clearances.

The Cross Sectional View of Rings and Crankshaft Reject Size chart support component identification and wear assessment. The breather section also identifies a specific damage risk: pressure on the fiber-disc valve can distort its internal support bracket.

Engine removal from the chassis and engine-mounting torque information require the applicable chassis manual. This publication concentrates on engine, fuel and electrical repair.

Carburetor Variants and Governor Settings

For fuel delivery, the manual provides separate repair procedures for the carburetor families identified in its Carburetor Application chart. Pulsa-Jet and Vacu-Jet coverage addresses diaphragms and fuel pipes; Flo-Jet I and II sections cover float, nozzle and body inspection.

Factory speed tables separate the 76, 80 and 81 tractor chassis serial groups. Air vane governors have no adjustment beyond spring replacement; governor-shaft and governed-speed adjustments apply to the mechanical systems.

Electrical Diagnostics and Serial Breaks

Charging diagnosis separates battery-charging and accessory-circuit faults, with electrical schematics and illustrated test connections for rectifiers, diodes and stator coils. Illustrations include Checking charging coil continuity and Checking for grounded charging coils.

For Model 80 from S/N 41615 and Model 81 from S/N 41201, plus all 111, 182, 282 and 382 tractors, the stator and diode cable are serviced as an assembly. That distinction helps identify the replacement scope before ordering charging-system parts.

Electric, Recoil and Vertical Pull Starters

Separate procedures cover 12V DC and 110V AC rectified starters on the 170,000, 190,000, 191,000 and 253,000 engine series. The 92,000 series has its own motor and clutch section, exploded assembly view FESM-9188, and nickel cadmium battery and charger tests.

Motor inspection addresses winding shorts, open circuits, grounds, brushes and commutators. The manual warns that clamping or striking permanent-magnet starter housings can crack their ceramic magnets.

Recoil starter sections cover rewind mechanisms and clutches. Vertical pull starter service also includes the recoil traction lockout used on self-propelled lawn mowers.

Shop Tools and Service Precautions

Tool references include spark tester 19051, breaker plunger bore gauge 19055, and valve guide reject gauges 19122 and 19151.

Follow the manual's precautions for fuel handling, accidental starting and electrical shock, particularly during AC starter and rectifier testing.
