In 1998 Porsche introduced the 996 model, which was an epic change in their legendary 911 Carrera series, they moved from an air-cooled to a water-cooled engine. This modification as well as its different design is perhaps why the Porsche 996 is considered today as one of the most reviled generations for some time. The Porsche 996 was introduced in 1998 with a 3.4 liter water cooled flat six-cylinder engine emitting 296 horsepower capable of pushing the new 911 0-60 in 5.1 seconds. Their first water cooled power plant is recognized to have some problems, so much so that in 2002 (available in 2001 in the 9114S) they transformed it to a 3.6-liter which enhanced its reliability. The 3.6-liter Porsche flat 6 engine was what engineered the Porsche 993, which to most fans represents one of the most required air-cooled Porsches ever manufactured. Although this was a water-cooled version it better the 996 appeal to the Porsche fan base and enhanced its power to 320hp and 0-60 to 4.9 seconds. In 2000 Porsche introduced their new all-wheel drive Turbo edition of the 996, which increased the power to 420hp, 0-60 to 4.2 seconds and was admired by the automotive press as a triumph of engineering. Even the Porsche 911 Turbo today represents the economical generation available on the market.

The 996 Carrera now appears as a modern vehicle. That’s ok, because it is a modern vehicle. But on the other hand one could wonder if a 911 should be so ’slick’. The 911 has always been different from other vehicles. No other producer would have continued to advance upon a car that has such a hard lay-out. The road holding of the first 911’s was so poor, people would lay bricks in the nose of the vehicle to keep it on the road. For there was so much weight at the back of the car you could, when taking a corner a bit too fast, unexpectedly be doing 80 km/h ---backwards. The 911 was bad for suddenly spinning without any prior warning. Driving a 911 you always had to be careful not to push it too far. To better enjoy driving the car it is advisable you get its manual.
