The 2.5 L VM diesel material covers Bosch VP36 fuel delivery, MSA and PCM control functions, and diesel-specific AX15 and NV231 service. The diesel maintenance schedule covers engine-specific items and directs readers to the 1997 XJ service manual for gasoline-engine and non-engine maintenance.

AW-4 Fault Isolation and Axle Setup

The Chrysler AW-4 chapter uses manual-shift and cooler-flow checks alongside TCM, sensor, and solenoid tests to separate electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical faults before teardown. Its overhaul procedures cover the oil pump, clutch and brake packs, one-way clutches, planetary assemblies, and output shaft.

The oil-pump section explains how forcing the pump into place can damage the stator-shaft seal rings.

The axle chapters cover axle-shaft repair and standard and Trac-Lok differentials. They distinguish the shim-controlled 181 FBI front axle from the collapsible-spacer setups in the 194 RBI and 8-1/4 rear axles. Ring-and-pinion setup includes pinion depth, bearing preload, backlash, and tooth-contact checks.

For the AW-4 valve-body solenoids, the ATSG manual specifies 11–15 ohms between the solenoid terminal and mounting bracket.
