The two-stroke publications provide their own model and starting-serial references. The F15W manual covers four-stroke engine service, while the F15Z supplement adds revised engine, bracket, electrical, and power-tilt information.

For complete F15Z service information, Yamaha specifies use of the supplement together with the F15A (F15) Service Manual 66M-28197-Z7-11.

Search and diagram detail: Text search is available in the F15Z supplement and selected later pages; most earlier pages are not searchable. Embedded bookmarks provide access to the five main publications and numerous chapters, but the repeated F15W block has no separate bookmark. Small wiring and connector labels on the checked diagrams are readable with enlargement.

Power-Unit, Gearcase, and Power-Tilt Service

These highlights are a selection of the documented work. Further topics include anode inspection and lubrication-point diagrams.

• Fuel system: Carburetor removal, disassembly, float and needle-valve inspection, fuel-pump diaphragm checks, and model-specific throttle-linkage and idle adjustments.

• Two-stroke engine repair: Power-unit removal, reed-valve inspection, cylinder-head service, crankcase separation, and crankshaft, piston, and piston-ring inspection.

• Four-stroke engine repair: F15 timing-belt installation, camshaft and valve inspection, valve-guide replacement, valve-seat refacing, and oil-pump service.

Written primarily for Yamaha dealers and their trained mechanics, these publications assume a basic understanding of mechanical and electrical service procedures.

Engine Overhaul and Fuel-System Detail

Power-unit removal and installation charts accompany exploded views and component inspection procedures. Cylinder-bore wear limits, piston-ring end gaps, and crankshaft checks provide the reference data needed to assess parts during an overhaul.

The F15 four-stroke material extends to rocker arms, valve guides, valve-seat cutting and lapping, oil-pump clearances, and crankshaft bearing selection. These procedures belong to the four-stroke publications; select the appropriate engine section before using its specifications.

The carburetor sections include float-height checks, needle-valve inspection, and publication-specific pilot-screw information. Fuel-pump inspection addresses diaphragm damage and seat-valve distortion. Yamaha warns that steel wire can enlarge carburetor jets during cleaning and affect engine performance.

For F15 crankcase assembly, the manual also warns that installing oil seals after tightening the crankcase bolts can damage the seals.

Gearcase Setup and Workshop Reference

The lower-unit chapters distinguish between reusing the original case and internal parts, replacing the case, and replacing internal components. That distinction determines whether shim calculations or measurement and adjustment are required.

Separate USA/Canada and other-market shim-selection methods are documented, with tools such as pinion-height gauge YB-34232 and shimming plate 90890-06701. Backlash measurement diagrams and shim tables support gear setup after component replacement.

Electrical Fault Tracing and F15Z Tilt Checks

Ignition-coil resistance specifications, charge- and pulser-coil tests, and starter-circuit checks support fault isolation. The electrical sections identify the digital tester and peak-voltage adapter used for these measurements.

The F15Z supplement includes separate color wiring diagrams for remote-control and tiller-control power-tilt variants. Its bleeding and operating checks address unstable movement and failure to hold tilt position, while the troubleshooting chart links symptoms to fluid level, the manual valve, fluid passages, and the PT motor.

Follow the manual’s precautions around ignition-test voltages, rotating flywheel components, and flammable fuel vapors.

Selected Head-Torque and Gear-Backlash Data

The 9.9U/15U cylinder-head bolt table specifies two tightening stages: 8 Nm for the first stage and 17 Nm for the final stage.

Forward-gear backlash is listed as 0.19–0.56 mm in the 9.9U/15U publication, compared with 0.19–0.86 mm in the 9.9V/15V and 9.9C/15C publications. The separate ranges make matching the gear-setup data to the correct publication important.
