Honda Manual Features & Content Preview

  • Set contents - 11 PDFs, 194 pages total: an 82-page Dutch owner-handbook file with appended third-party reference pages, eight English American Honda service bulletins, a two-page aftermarket audio-wiring excerpt, and an 88-page third-party exploded-view compilation.
  • Coverage is document-specific: the handbook names the GL1500 SE and GL1500 A/Aspencade; the bulletins address 1988, 1988-1989, 1988-1993, selected 2000 GL1500A/SE motorcycles, and one 1997-1998 GL1500C/CT Valkyrie CB-radio application.
  • Routine owner work includes daily inspection, oil and filter service, final-drive lubrication, air-filter and spark-plug replacement, idle checks, wheel removal and installation, brake-pad inspection, battery care, and fuse replacement.
  • 1988 fuel-system repair material covers the carburetor vent-hose and vacuum fuel-valve update, carburetor removal, slow-jet and vacuum-piston changes, ICU/CCU replacement, hose routing, cable adjustment, and final leak and operation checks.
  • Campaign and accessory procedures document bank-angle-sensor replacement, the AICV T-fitting emissions recall, windshield and saddlebag sealing, CB sub-harness identification, and the Valkyrie noise-suppressor/transceiver update.
  • Visual references include vacuum- and vent-hose routing, bank-angle-sensor and AICV locations, CB grounding, audio harness-side connector views, a main wire-harness test table, and numbered exploded assembly drawings.

What the Owner's Handbook Actually Covers

The Honda handbook section carries printed codes 37MAM830 and 00X37-MAM-8300 and identifies the GL1500 SE and GL1500 A/Aspencade. Its regional coverage codes include E, F, ED, U, SW, FI, AR, SP, SI, and SD, with equipment and specifications varying by destination. Although the title page is multilingual, the scanned handbook text is in Dutch.

This is owner/operator material rather than a complete workshop repair manual. It is suited to an experienced owner who reads Dutch and needs operating, inspection, and routine maintenance information; several English campaign bulletins are expressly written for skilled technicians with the proper tools, equipment, and training.

The operating sections explain the instrument panel, cruise control, electric reverse, integrated braking, adjustable rear air suspension, onboard compressor, windshield and ventilation controls, luggage, AM/FM radio and cassette deck, intercom, and the U-SE CB transceiver. Separate SI and non-SI maintenance schedules cover the fuel, ignition, cooling, secondary-air, final-drive, brake, clutch, suspension, steering-head, reverse, and cruise-control systems. The specifications section supplies fluid capacities and approved lubricants, tire data, service limits, drivetrain ratios, battery and charging-system data, bulb ratings, and fuse values.

Year- and VIN-Specific Honda Bulletins

The most detailed repair procedures are concentrated in the factory bulletins. GL1500 #1 applies to 1988 49-state motorcycles through VIN 1HFSC220JA004107 and California motorcycles through 1HFSC221JA000959. It distinguishes the two emissions configurations while installing the vent pipes and vacuum fuel valve, correcting hose routing, preserving a future carburetor-synchronization connection, and identifying completed units. The bulletin warns that pinched vent hoses can allow fuel into the cylinders while the engine is off; routing a replacement line where the bodywork can pinch it can recreate the same no-crank condition.

GL1500 #2 covers all 1988 GL1500s with low-speed hesitation, idle fluctuation, or afterfire. It documents carburetor and air-cleaner removal, slow-jet and vacuum-piston replacement, updated ICU and CCU installation, regional hose checks, secondary-throttle-cable adjustment, and operational testing. Other factory material covers all-model 1988-1993 bank-angle-sensor recall work, 1988-1989 windshield and saddlebag leak repairs, CB radios through serial 6655, and the 2000 AICV recall's four model/VIN groups. The Valkyrie bulletin applies only to affected 1997-1998 GL1500C/CT optional CB radios purchased before May 31, 1998.

Drawings, Repair Cautions, and Scope Limits

The two-page audio excerpt provides connector identities and wire-by-wire test connections for reverse and non-reverse models, but it comes from an aftermarket manual. Likewise, the 88-page drawing file is a third-party demo compilation of numbered exploded views; it does not supply a parts-name index or repair instructions. Five magazine, GPS/headset pinout, and relay-reference pages are appended after the Honda handbook section in the 82-page file.

The complete Honda GL1500 service manual is not part of this set. Several bulletins refer to separate service-manual sections for bodywork, carburetor service, and torque specifications, while the CB sub-harness bulletin refers to kit instructions that are also not included. During wheel work, the handbook cautions that operating a brake with the wheel removed can force caliper pistons out, and careless disc placement during installation can damage the pads. Fuel-system, wheel, brake, and recall repair should be performed with the motorcycle securely supported and with the training and tools required by the applicable document.
