Mitsubishi Manual Features & Content Preview
This 1,164-page PDF is Mitsubishi's August 1998 Workshop Manual for the 1999 European-market Space Runner and Space Wagon. Coverage is chassis-specific: N61W, N84W, and N94W, with left- and right-hand-drive variants, 4G93 or 4G64 DOHC GDI engines, and the transmission combinations listed below. The publication is written for service mechanics and is best suited to trained technicians with MUT-II access, electrical test equipment, and factory-style special tools. Its SRS section further limits air bag and seat-belt pre-tensioner work to authorized personnel.
-
Exact vehicle coverage: Identifies N61W Space Runner 2WD, N84W Space Wagon 2WD, and N94W Space Wagon full-time 4WD configurations, including F5M42, F4A42, and W5M42 transmission applications.
-
Engine and GDI work: Covers 4G93 1.8L and 4G64 2.4L on-vehicle testing, camshaft and crankshaft oil seals, cylinder-head gasket service, timing-belt installation and adjustment, 4G64 timing belt B service, engine removal and installation, MUT-II diagnosis, and fuel-system checks.
-
Transmission and driveline: Details clutch hydraulics, manual and automatic transmission removal and installation, F4A42 stall and hydraulic pressure testing, A/T-ECU fault isolation, cooler-line flushing, line-pressure adjustment, propeller shafts, drive shafts, front and rear axles, and 4WD differential/LSD repair procedures.
-
Suspension, steering, and brakes: Includes wheel alignment, strut and control-arm service, steering-gear and oil-pump repair, hydraulic bleeding and pressure testing, master-cylinder and disc-brake work, plus separate 2WD and 4WD ABS diagnosis.
-
Electrical, SRS, body, and HVAC: Documents the immobilizer, combination meters, lamp aiming, Smart Wiring System communication, multi-center display/navigation unit, charging, starting, ignition, SRS troubleshooting and post-collision checks, body glass and doors, and R-134a A/C testing and charging.
-
Factory reference material: Provides the A/T hydraulic circuit, 2WD/4WD ABS construction diagrams, 4G93/4G64 GDI system diagrams, engine-ECU terminal arrangements, alternator waveform examples, and emission-control vacuum diagrams, backed by torque tables, fluid data, service limits, pressure checks, and electrical test specifications.
Model and Drivetrain Match
The N61W Space Runner uses the 1,834 cc 4G93 GDI with either the F5M42 2WD five-speed manual or F4A42 2WD four-speed automatic. N84W Space Wagon coverage pairs the 2,351 cc 4G64 GDI with those same 2WD transmission choices. The N94W chapter applies to the 4G64 with the W5M42 five-speed manual and full-time 4WD; no 4WD automatic combination is listed.
This is not the earlier 1992-1998 N11W, N18W, N31W, N33W, N34W, N38W, N41W, N43W, N44W, or N48W manual. It also does not cover a 2.0L engine, diesel engine, or MPI configuration. Those distinctions matter before ordering parts or selecting a diagnostic path.
Repair Depth and Scope Limits
The chassis manual goes well beyond routine maintenance, but it is not a complete engine or transmission bench-overhaul publication. Engine coverage includes in-vehicle inspection and adjustment, seals, cylinder-head gasket and timing-drive work, plus removal and installation of the complete engine assembly. Mitsubishi expressly directs detailed inspection, disassembly, and reassembly of an engine or transmission after removal to separate engine and transmission manuals. A full 2.4L block or cylinder-head rebuild is therefore outside this PDF's scope.
Complete vehicle wiring-harness routing and function-separated circuit diagrams are also supplied in a separate Electrical Wiring publication, identified in this manual as PHDE9802. This PDF instead carries system diagrams, connector and ECU terminal checks, diagnosis-code charts, actuator tests, and circuit-specific troubleshooting for the systems covered in each repair group.
Diagnostic Equipment and Special Tools
The tool charts call out the MB991502 MUT-II, MD998330 A/T oil-pressure gauge, MB990662 steering pressure gauge with its adapters, and MB991613 SRS check harness. Additional pullers, oil-seal installers, spring compressors, bearing tools, and boot-band crimpers are identified by Mitsubishi tool number at the relevant procedures.
Manual-Specific Repair Cautions
During 4G64 flywheel work, the manual warns that the specifically marked mounting bolt must not be removed; doing so can put the flywheel out of balance and damage it. It also flags the risk of drive- or output-shaft splines cutting transmission and transfer oil seals during removal or installation. SRS and R-134a service must follow the manual's dedicated safety procedures because of stored deployment energy and pressurized refrigerant.
