Model and Workshop Scope
This Ducati workshop publication uses the factory abbreviations for the Monoposto Strada, Sport Production, Biposto, and 916 Senna versions. Unless an exception is stated, an operation or specification applies to all covered 748 and 916 versions. Variant callouts remain important when selecting transmission data, suspension components, electronic control units, wiring layouts, and adjustment procedures.
The General Operations section starts with a dismantling-sequence flow chart. It then covers removal of the headlamp fairing and body panels, seat, battery box, airbox and filter housings, coolant, fuel tank and auxiliary tank, exhaust system, shock linkage, final-drive chain, throttle body and rear-cylinder intake manifold, and the engine from the frame.
Engine, Gearbox, and Desmodromic Valve Gear
The engine chapters continue through strip-down, inspection, repair, and final assembly. Covered assemblies include timing belts and rollers, the oil cooler, cylinder heads, cylinders and pistons, generator and electronic-ignition flywheel, starter drive, gear selector, clutch, oil pump, primary drive, crankcase halves, gearbox, camshafts, opening and closing rockers, and valves.
Overhaul data includes piston, ring, connecting-rod, big-end bearing, crankshaft, crankpin, valve-guide, valve-seat, rocker, camshaft-support, bearing, and oil-seal inspection. The manual also covers the lubrication circuit, oil and coolant pumps, clutch plates and springs, gearbox shafts and gears, selector drum, and selector forks. Reassembly procedures address joining the crankcases, installing the transmission, clutch, timing drive and flywheel, rebuilding the water pump, fitting the cylinder/piston/head groups, adjusting the belt rollers, positioning the timing and rpm sensors, and verifying valve timing.

Fuel Injection, Diagnostics, and Electrical Systems
The Weber Marelli injection/ignition chapter covers the fuel pump, injectors, pressure regulator, intake circuit, absolute-pressure sensor, air- and coolant-temperature sensors, throttle-position potentiometer, coils and power modules, inductive pick-ups, timing and rpm sensors, and the system’s normal, starting, acceleration, and deceleration phases.
Diagnostic coverage is separated for I.A.W. P8 and I.A.W. 1.6 M. The manual explains check-lamp connection and use, lists the error codes, describes likely circuit faults, and provides checks for sensors, injectors, coils, the fuel pump, wiring, and connectors. The 1.6 M section also covers stored-code clearing. Electrical chapters distinguish the 916 STR./S.P. ’94 system from ’95 models and include battery charging, generator and regulator tests, starter service, connectors, handlebar and key switches, relays, warning-light circuits, and cable and hydraulic-line routing.

Chassis, Suspension, Brakes, and Cooling
Chassis repair coverage includes SHOVA GD 051 fork removal and overhaul, wheel-bearing service, rear-wheel and eccentric-hub overhaul, chain and sprocket work, rear swingarm service, rear-suspension linkage overhaul, and steering-head bearing replacement. The rear-shock overhaul chapter is specifically identified for the SHOVA unit used on STRADA/BIP. versions; it is not presented as a blanket overhaul procedure for every S.P. rear-suspension unit.
The brake section covers calipers and master cylinders, discs, pad inspection, fluid draining, bleeding, and brake-line routing. Separate hydraulic-clutch pages cover the operating pump, draining, and bleeding. Cooling material identifies the circuit and covers coolant-level, radiator, hose, and general system checks.
The manual flags several repair traps. Transmission-shaft bearing inner races must be seated in the crankcase bearings rather than left on the shaft ends before the cases are joined; leaving them on the shafts can misalign and overload the bearing assemblies during closure. The 1.6 M ECU connector must not be unplugged immediately after key-off because its EPROM components can be damaged, and dedicated extraction tools are specified. The fuel-filter procedure warns that its thin inlet can be damaged by excessive air pressure.
Because the publication addresses pressurized fuel, hot coolant, brake and clutch hydraulics, engine removal, electrical testing, and rotating drivetrain parts, stable support, ventilation, fire precautions, electrical isolation, and suitable eye and skin protection are required for workshop use.
