How the 1990 Supplement Fits the Base Manual
This is a supplement-and-base-manual set rather than a standalone 1990 rewrite. Yamaha’s 1990 pages supply the model identification, updated general and chassis specifications, drive-chain slack adjustment, rear-wheel service, and front- and rear-brake material for the A/SAC models. The remaining repair chapters come from the U/SUC base manual, so the model-code split matters when selecting specifications and California-specific procedures.
For serial matching, the FZR400A starts at VIN JYA3BFE0LA012101 and engine No. 3BF-012101. The FZR400SAC starts at VIN JYA3FHC0LA003101 and engine No. 3FH-003101. The underlying U/SUC manual identifies its starting engine numbers as 3BF-000101 and 3FH-000101. This distinction is especially relevant to California emissions equipment and EXUP diagnosis.
Internal Engine, Fuel, and Cooling Repair
The 399cc liquid-cooled DOHC four-cylinder chapter is written for internal repair, not only routine maintenance. It covers engine removal and remounting; cylinder-head, camshaft, valve-guide, valve-seat, and cam-chain work; piston and cylinder inspection; clutch and starter-clutch service; A.C. magneto removal; transmission and shift-cam disassembly; crankcase work; and oil- and water-pump service. Crankshaft and connecting-rod oil-clearance checks use Plastigage and color-coded bearing selection, giving rebuilders the factory method for matching bearing shells.
The engine chapter also flags a genuine timing-related repair trap: after the camshaft caps are released, rotating the camshaft can damage the valves. It describes cylinder-head handling intended to keep valve lifters and adjusting pads from dropping into the crankcase.
Carburetor coverage includes a labeled section view, 3BF-00/3FH-00 identification, bank removal, internal disassembly, passage and diaphragm inspection, reassembly, fuel-level setup, installation, and synchronization.
