Technical Scope and Coverage
The power unit is the 1,812 cc (110.6 cu. in.) supercharged DOHC inline-four with an 8.6:1 compression ratio, wet-sump lubrication, water cooling, and TCI ignition. Propulsion is a direct-drive, single-stage axial-flow jet pump with a stainless-steel three-blade impeller, reverse gate, and five-position manual trim system. The manual goes well beyond routine maintenance: repair coverage includes engine removal and installation, camshaft and timing-chain work, valve-clearance adjustment, cylinder-head and valve-seat service, crankcase/piston/connecting-rod work, generator and flywheel service, starter-clutch checks, supercharger drive-gear work, and trochoid oil-pump inspection and priming.
Jet-pump repair procedures cover removal and installation of the pump, reverse gate, jet thrust nozzle/nozzle ring, impeller duct, impeller housing, impeller and drive shaft, plus bearing/seal service and intermediate-housing/driven-coupling work. Fuel-system coverage includes the tank, pump module, sender, rollover and check valves, injectors, quick connectors, rail, and fuel-pressure testing. Hull and control work includes the telescopic steering master, QSTS grip/converter and cables, shift system, remote control cables, seats/handgrip, exhaust system, and deck/hull disassembly.
There are important model-specific differences. The FZR is a 2-rider configuration; the FZS is a 3-rider configuration and is the only one shown with a reboarding step. Their rear seats and handgrips are not interchangeable. The FZR/FZS ECM is identified as 6AN-**, and these models do not use the FX SHO cruise-assist or no-wake functions. The manual also specifies a 649.5 mm (25.57 in.) FZR/FZS drive shaft, which is longer than the FX SHO part and not interchangeable. For fitment, note that this publication identifies the F2R/F2C models and starting I.D./engine serial data above; it does not state a 2009–2013 model-year coverage range.
Factory Specifications, Diagnostics, and Tools
Key service data includes 345–370 kPa (49.1–52.6 psi) fuel pressure, 610 kPa (86.8 psi) compression pressure as reference data, and cold valve clearance of 0.14–0.23 mm intake / 0.28–0.37 mm exhaust. Air-cooler holding pressure is 200 kPa (28.5 psi) on the water passage and 100 kPa (14.2 psi) on the air passage. Jet-pump impeller-to-housing clearance is 0.35–0.45 mm (0.014–0.018 in), with a 0.6 mm (0.024 in) limit. Engine-oil quantities are 4.3 L total, 3.0 L without filter replacement, and 3.1 L with filter replacement.
Electrical repair and fault-finding are detailed. The manual explains YDIS Diagnosis, Diagnosis Record, Engine Monitor, Stationary Test, Active Test, Data Logger, and the ECM Record Data Graph. Yamaha specifically recommends YDIS for ETV/TPS/APS troubleshooting because the dual analog meter can display only one diagnostic code at a time. It also supplies voltage, resistance, continuity, and control thresholds for the ignition and charging systems, oil-pressure switch, thermoswitch, thermo sensor, intake-air and engine-temperature sensors, TPS, APS, cam-position sensor, ETV relay, steering sensor, and reverse sensor.
Referenced service equipment includes YDIS connecting kit 60V-85300-04; fuel-pressure gauge adapter YW-06842 / 90890-06842 and gauge YB-06766 / 90890-06786; leakage tester 90890-06840 with air-cooler attachment 90890-06731; camshaft wrench 90890-06724; and coupler wrench 90890-06729. These are tied directly to component tests and repair procedures rather than serving as generic illustrations.
Repair Limits and Workshop Notes
Some assemblies are deliberately treated as test-and-replace units. The manual says not to disassemble the supercharger, throttle body assembly, air cooler, oil cooler, oil pump assembly, breather assembly, or fuel pump module. That is an important scope limit if the intended repair is an internal rebuild of one of those assemblies.
A few manual-specific repair traps matter. The fuel-injector O-ring must be lubricated before installation; the manual warns that it can twist and break, causing a fuel leak. During generator/drive-coupling work, it warns against using a gas torch and against heat damage to the wiring harness. Reversing the battery leads during relay testing can seriously damage the main and fuel-pump relay.
Fuel pressure must be relieved before opening the fuel system, the battery must be removed before jet-pump work, and adequate cooling-water supply is required when the engine is run on land. Follow the manual’s WARNINGS, NOTICEs, specified tools, and torque procedures for any repair involving pressurized fuel, rotating machinery, hot components, or electrical testing.
