Hyundai Matrix 2002–2013 0EM Service Manual

Hyundai issued this Matrix Shop Manual in March 2001 for dealership service work on the original Matrix wagon. This product presents that factory publication as 17 PDF files. The identification section distinguishes L/GL/GLS grades, left- and right-hand-drive layouts, restraint configurations, 1.6L and 1.8L DOHC gasoline engines, and VIN production-year characters for 2000-2003. Hyundai expressly wrote the manual for authorized-dealer service technicians; its depth is suited to trained mechanics with scan tools, pressure gauges, electrical test equipment, and the listed special tools.

• Engine repair: Covers engine/transaxle assembly removal, cylinder block and piston/connecting-rod inspection, crankshaft and cylinder-head work, valve service, cooling and lubrication repair, and timing-belt installation.

Variant and Diagnostic Detail

The engine chapters distinguish the 1.6L hydraulic lash adjusters from the 1.8L mechanical-lash valvetrain, for which valve-clearance inspection and adjustment are provided. The suspension data also separates spring identification by engine, manual/automatic transaxle, and conventional-brake/ABS configuration. Specifications are organized as component torque tables, service standards and limits, clearances, capacities, approved lubricants, electrical values, alignment data, and pressure-test criteria rather than generic maintenance advice.

Fuel-system DTC charts trace MAP/IAT, TPS, CKP/CMP, oxygen-sensor, injector, purge, idle-speed, and acceleration-sensor faults. The automatic-transaxle chapter includes fail-safe behavior, scan data, solenoid and pulse-generator tests, pressure interpretation, and service adjustments. ABS pages supply HECU terminal charts, actuator tests, and bleeding mode; SRS pages cover SRSCM checks, driver/passenger/side airbags, belt pretensioners, clock spring, warning-lamp logic, and remote-deployment/disposal procedures.

Technical Drawings, Tools, and Repair Cautions

Representative diagrams include ECM and harness pin maps; automatic-transaxle hydraulic circuits for Park/Neutral and every drive range; TCM circuit sheets; ABS external wiring and schematic diagrams; the SRS wiring diagram; and three manual HVAC schematics. Named tools include engine support fixture 09200-38001, A/T oil-pressure adapters 09452-21001/21002 with gauge 09452-21500, glass cut-out tool 09861-31100 with blade 09861-31200, and airbag deployment tool 0957A-34100A.

The driveline instructions warn that driving a pry bar too far into the transaxle can damage the oil seal, while pulling the shaft forcefully can dislodge CV-joint components, tear a boot, or damage a bearing. The SRS section requires diagnostic codes to be read before battery disconnection and forbids disassembling airbag modules, the clock spring, or SRS wiring for reuse; incorrect sequencing can cause deployment or leave the system inoperative. Follow Hyundai’s isolation and handling precautions for SRS, brake, fuel, electrical, and refrigerant work.

Important Scope Limits

Full internal overhaul procedures for the M5BF2 and A4AF3/A4BF2 transaxles are assigned to separate overhaul manuals; this set retains their diagnostic, adjustment, removal/installation, hydraulic-circuit, and summary component-view material. The 1.8L engine-mechanical file begins at EM-15, and the emissions-control file contains only EC-1 through EC-6 general specifications, troubleshooting, component locations, and connector views. There is no diesel engine or diesel fuel-system repair chapter. The separate Electrical Troubleshooting Manual, Pub. No. A17E-EG15A, cited by the foreword is not included, although several system sections contain their own circuit diagrams.
