Built-In Diagnostics and Calibration Coverage
This is service documentation rather than an operator's guide; routine use is covered in separate User and Quick Reference Guides. Its troubleshooting flow follows the printer's startup through file-system and operating-system initialization, I/O and front-panel startup, engine launch, parser startup, and mechanical initialization. A failed stage can then be checked against the power-up buzzer table, rear power-switch LEDs, and the voltage-status LEDs on the Interconnect and PrintMech PCAs.
Ink-system coverage goes well beyond cartridge replacement. The manual explains ink-cartridge, printhead, and printhead-cleaner status messages, ink-system priming, printhead error codes, and use of the Carriage Interconnect Wiper when printheads are repeatedly rejected. The built-in tests are designed to confirm the failed assembly before a repair part is replaced.
The Electronics Module Test checks the Main PCA formatter, printer configuration, Gamut PCI PCA, power supply, PrintMech, Interconnect PCA, carriage communication, and ISS communication. HP specifically notes that this test does not test the EIO card or hard disk drive, an important limit when isolating storage or interface faults.
The calibration chapter identifies procedures required after component repair—and in some cases after an assembly was only disassembled to gain access elsewhere. It covers Scan Axis, Service Station, Paper Advance, Drop Detector, Line Sensor, Platen Blue Line, and Vacuum calibration.
Print-quality fault isolation uses the three-part Service Image Quality Diagnostic Print—Alignment Test, Printheads & Paper Advance Test, and Printhead Problems—plus the Nozzle Print Test. Dedicated sections then address advanced banding, Dark Light Zone Banding, PEPA, PANTONE and general color accuracy, image clipping, VLS, bubbles, black-printhead decap, ink contamination, and satellites.
Component Replacement, Parts Figures, and Electrical Reference
Chapter 8 follows the printer's disassembly order and gives illustrated removal and installation procedures for the ink-delivery, scan-axis, media-axis, electronics, and paper-path assemblies. Related tests, resets, and calibrations are called out at the component level. The required-tools page lists a long Torx screwdriver with the indicated attachments and a small flat-blade screwdriver.
The manual also flags repair traps that are easy to miss. The service-station fasteners are close enough to damage the encoder strip if handled carelessly. It separately warns that the HDD and the ink-supply tubes/trailing cable must not be replaced in the same repair operation; doing so can leave default serial data in nonvolatile memory and require the Error 71:19 recovery utility.
Visual reference material includes exploded assembly drawings, numbered parts callouts, HP part-number tables, power-switch and PCA LED diagrams, front-panel test screens, diagnostic-print examples, and component-removal illustrations. It does not contain complete wiring schematics or board-level circuit diagrams.
HP limits these procedures to qualified service personnel. Hardware repair requires AC power isolation and ESD precautions, while powered diagnostics require clear access around the moving carriage and media-drive mechanisms.
