Operator and Maintenance Walkthrough
Navigating the intricacies of the '95 C4 requires configuration-specific factory information. The manual separates LT1 and LT5 engine operation where it matters and covers both automatic-transmission functions and the six-speed manual. The ignition section identifies all five switch positions — ACC, LOCK, OFF, RUN, and START — while the manual-transmission section includes the shift pattern, recommended upshift speeds, downshift limits, and the One-to-Four shift logic. Fuel shutoff is also engine-specific: 7,200 rpm for the LT5 and 5,850 rpm for the LT1.
ZR-1 coverage goes well beyond a model-name reference. The LT5 Engine Power Switch section explains the engine's two sets of intake runners and fuel injectors and the NORMAL/FULL power modes. Full-power operation requires coolant and oil temperatures between 68°F and 302°F (20°C to 150°C), system voltage above 10 volts, and no SERVICE ENGINE SOON indication; the power setting can be selected at engine speeds up to 4,000 rpm.
Security and electrical operation are covered in similar detail. The Passive Keyless Entry (PKE) system has a typical 3–7 ft (1½–2 m) operating range, supports up to three matched transmitters, and includes transmitter matching and DL2450 battery replacement procedures. Coupe and Convertible antenna locations are shown separately. PASS-Key uses the resistor pellet in the ignition key and shuts down the starter and fuel systems for about three minutes when an incorrect key is detected. The Delayed Accessory Bus keeps the power windows and audio system active for up to 15 minutes after the ignition is switched off, provided neither door is opened. The center-console accessory connection is also documented, including its battery, RUN-power and ground leads and a 10-amp maximum load.
The restraint section covers both driver and passenger Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) airbags, readiness diagnostics, sensing-system operation, and deployment characteristics. For a rigid barrier, the stated frontal deployment threshold is approximately 9–15 mph (14–24 km/h); the airbags are not designed for rollover, side, or rear impacts. SIR repair work requires particular care: the manual warns that reserve energy can remain for up to two minutes after the ignition is switched off and the battery is disconnected, and it directs actual airbag service to qualified technicians and the separate service information.
Operational Data and Specifications
Accurate capacities and component limits are one of the stronger technical sections. The LT1 cooling system holds approximately 17.8 qt (16.9 L), while the LT5 system is 14.7 qt (13.9 L). Both use a 180°F (82°C) thermostat specification. Fuel capacity is 20.0 gal (75.7 L). Factory compression ratios are 10.5:1 for the LT1 and 11.0:1 for the LT5, with sequential multiport fuel injection specified for the 5.7L V8 engines.
Crankcase capacity with a filter change is 4.5 qt (4.3 L) for the LT1 and 8.6 qt (8.1 L) for the LT5. The automatic transmission is listed at approximately 10.0 pt (4.7 L) for a drain and refill and 21.6 pt (10.2 L) for overhaul capacity; manual-transmission overhaul capacity is 4.4 pt (2.1 L). Rear-axle capacity is 1.5 qt (1.42 L), with 4 oz (118 ml) of limited-slip additive specified for a complete refill. Wheel-nut torque is 100 lb-ft (140 N·m).
Fluid requirements are equally specific. The engine requires oil meeting GM Standard GM4718M, with SAE 5W-30 preferred. The automatic transmission specifies DEXRON-III, while the manual transmission uses SAE 5W-30 manual-transmission fluid. The limited-slip rear axle calls for GM P/N 12345977 or SAE 80W-90 GL-5 gear lubricant plus the specified limited-slip additive. DOT-3 brake fluid and the proper GM-spec coolant mixture are identified by specification and, where applicable, GM part number.
Factory Procedures, Reference Views, and Scope
Owner-level factory procedures cover work that is easy to mishandle without model-specific information: PKE transmitter matching, Engine Oil Life Monitor reset, LT1 and LT5 coolant high-fill procedures, automatic and manual transmission fluid checks, hydraulic-clutch fluid access, air-filter replacement, wheel and compact-spare handling, towing setup, Coupe roof-panel removal/storage/installation, Convertible top operation, and optional hardtop removal and installation. The Convertible hardtop procedure also identifies the HATCH (45) fuse and the factory-supplied flat ratchet wrench; the replacement-parts table lists that wrench as GM P/N 10137741.
Several Corvette-specific damage traps are called out directly. The LT1 has a specific high-fill and air-bleed requirement; the manual warns that incorrect filling can lead to severe overheating and engine damage. The optional LTPWS sensor sits directly opposite the tire valve stem, and improper tire service or tire sealant can damage it. When storing the Coupe roof panel, raising its front edge more than 8 in (200 mm) while the rear corners are engaged can damage the panel, while improperly started installation bolts can strip their threads.
Electrical reference material includes the Instrument Panel Fuse Block, Forward Lamp Fuse Block, and ECM Engine Fuse Block, along with LT1/LT5 Instrument Cluster layouts, Power Curves — LT1/LT5, and Belt Routing — LT1/LT5 views. It does not contain full vehicle wiring schematics. Likewise, GM explicitly states that this owner's publication provides general operation and maintenance information; deeper diagnostic and repair information for chassis and body systems belongs to the separate 1995 Corvette Service Manual. That distinction is important if the intended job is an overhaul, detailed electrical fault diagnosis, SIR repair, or another workshop-level procedure.
