Repair Cautions and Scope

The powerhead chapter warns that the line-bored cylinder block and crankcase cover are a matched pair, while connecting-rod caps must return to the same rod in their original direction; mixing these parts prevents correct mating and can damage the assembly. Lower-unit installation guidance distinguishes lubricating the splines from putting grease on top of the driveshaft, where trapped grease can prevent full crankshaft engagement and damage both the powerhead and gear housing.

Propeller selection and installation are included, but in-depth propeller and boat-performance material is referred to separate Mercury publication P/N 90-86144. Follow the manual's safety notices: isolate the battery for electrical service, eliminate ignition sources around open fuel systems, wear eye protection when servicing the rewind starter, and never work beneath a suspended outboard.
