Documentation Overview
This is a two-part compilation of Land Rover factory workshop material rather than a single-year manual. Part One contains the five-book 1986 foundation and petrol-model updates through 1989. Part Two adds the general 1990–1993 changes, the 2.4/2.5 VM turbo-diesel material, and replacement sections for power steering and the LT77S gearbox. The manual directs the reader to use Part Two with Part One. Coverage ends with the 1993 model year; a 1994 model-year Range Rover requires the later publication.
Book One establishes vehicle identification, approved service tools, fitting practices, tuning data, maintenance schedules, lubricants, capacities, and torque references. The remaining four books cover the V8 engine and fuel systems, clutch and transmissions, transfer boxes, axles, steering, suspension, brakes, body and panel repair, HVAC, instruments, charging and starting systems, central locking, windows, and main electrical circuits.
The dated supplements matter because the vehicle changed substantially during this production cycle. The 1988 material introduces Lucas hot-wire EFI and catalyst equipment. The 1989 supplement adds the Borg Warner viscous-coupled transfer box and revised LT77 work. The 1990 section documents the 3.9-liter V8, Lucas 14CUX EFI, Wabco ABS, cruise control, and revised cooling and electrical systems. Later sections add the 1991 fuel system and glass sunroof, 1992 memory-seat and heated-seat electronics, and the 1993 LSE with its 4.2-liter V8, electronic air suspension, and electronic traction control.
Repair and Diagnostic Coverage
V8 procedures include engine removal, cylinder-head and valve-gear work, timing-chain and camshaft service, oil-pump inspection, piston and crankshaft procedures, reassembly, and fault diagnosis. The VM supplement adds separate 2.4- and 2.5-liter data, cylinder-head removal, liner-protrusion inspection, head-gasket selection, complete overhaul, injection-pump timing, turbocharger boost and end-float checks, and a dedicated diagnostic chart. Fuel-system material covers EFI wiring and continuity tests, ECU and sensor checks, injector and fuel-rail repair, carburetor overhaul and adjustment, emissions testing, and evaporative-loss diagnosis.
The LT77/LT77S chapters cover internal teardown, synchromesh and baulk-ring inspection, selective washer and end-float work, oil-pump and casing service, and reassembly. ZF 4HP22 coverage includes fault diagnosis, pressure checks, torque-converter and pump-area leak repair, and control-unit work. Transfer-box sections address the LT230T and Borg Warner unit, including output seals, viscous-unit testing, overhaul, and rolling-road limitations. Axle procedures extend through differentials, hubs, stub axles, swivel assemblies, CV joints, and preload adjustment.
Later chassis sections add diagnostic material rarely found in a general repair book. Wabco ABS coverage includes hydraulic and electrical circuit diagrams, depressurization and bleeding, accumulator and hydraulic-power-unit service, sensor replacement, fault diagnosis, and multimeter testing. The EAS chapter provides a pneumatic-system diagram, ECU inputs, fault recovery, harness-plug wiring details, leak testing, air-spring and height-sensor service, compressor and valve-block repair, and height calibration. VIN-specific changes include the EFI ECU transition from VIN 451997 and the revised alternator-drive arrangement after VIN 602813.
Representative illustrations include V8 internal assembly views, LT77S gears-and-shafts layouts, Borg Warner transfer-box exploded views, VM diesel component plates, Wabco ABS circuits, and EAS pneumatic and wiring diagrams. Tool callouts include 18G1501 torque-converter handles, LST111 oil-pump rotation/end-float gauge, 18G1205 flange wrench, and 18G1422 output-shaft seal installer.
The manual also identifies repair traps specific to these systems. Its replacement power-steering section requires correct steering-box centralization when steering components are disconnected; on cruise-control vehicles, incorrect handling can damage the spiral cassette. EAS air springs must remain mechanically restrained before inflation to prevent spring failure and component damage. Fuel-system, ABS/EAS, air-conditioning, and lifting work should follow the manual’s isolation, depressurization, ventilation, and vehicle-support precautions.
