One important break is the California Special front suspension: the 1st Series through chassis KD131644 uses an adjustable 45 mm Marzocchi inverted fork, while the 2nd Series from KD131645 uses the non-adjustable 45 mm hydraulic fork also associated with Jackal, Stone, and Special Sport.

Listed capacities include 3.0 L for the engine sump, 0.750 L for the gearbox, and 0.250 L for the final drive, divided into 0.230 L gear oil and 0.020 L specified additive. Dimensional data cover valve-seat geometry, piston/cylinder matching, crankpin sizes, bearing undersizes, and connecting-rod weight groups. Gearbox work includes bench disassembly, bearing removal, primary and secondary shafts, the clutch shaft with cush-drive damper pads, forks and splined drum, secondary-shaft shimming, selector adjustment, and reassembly. Final-drive repair covers the bevel pinion and Gleason crown wheel, bearing races, shimming, and pinion-to-crown contact checking.

The gearbox has a production change that matters for parts selection. California EV 1st Series, Special, and Jackal use 5-clutch-dog gears from gearbox CD 015565 onward, with specific earlier CD-number batches also identified. California EV 2001, Special Sport, and Stone use the 5-dog arrangement from the first gearbox.

Fuel and ignition coverage centers on the Magneti Marelli/Weber IAW 15M Alfa-N system with two 40 mm throttle bodies and Weber IW031 injectors. Diagnostics cover stored/current faults and circuit checks for the throttle-position potentiometer, air and oil temperature sensors, RPM/TDC sensor, injectors, coils, fuel-pump relay, and electronic tachometer, plus ECU-connected carburation setup and vacuum balancing. A critical scope distinction applies to California EV models built in 1997–2000 through chassis KD115749: those motorcycles use the earlier P08 injection/ignition ECU, and Moto Guzzi directs that system work to separate workshop manual 29920160. Specification Highlights

The 1064cc engine uses a 92 mm bore, 80 mm stroke, and 9.5:1 compression ratio, with a listed peak torque of 94 Nm at 5000 rpm and 54 kW at 6400 rpm. Standard lubrication pressure is 3.8–4.2 kg/cm², and the alternator is rated at 350 W at 5000 rpm (14 V, 25 A). The dry clutch drives a five-speed constant-mesh gearbox; shaft final-drive ratio is 1:4.125.

The tightening table specifies 40–42 Nm for head-to-crankcase fasteners, 120–150 Nm for the front-fork upper plugs, and 180–200 Nm for the bevel-sprocket bearing locknut; the manual notes that its torque values are checked as wet torque. Several repair traps are called out directly: cross-threading a spark plug can damage the cylinder-head threads; checking spark current without the specified caps can cause irreparable ECU damage; and the gearbox selector drum must be in neutral during cover installation so the selector keys do not interfere with the drum crown.

Fuel-system work, hydraulic brake service, engine/gearbox handling, and electrical diagnosis carry significant workshop hazards. Follow the model- and chassis-specific procedures and the safety instructions in the manual before beginning repair work.
