Component and System Overview
The Service Station Manual identifies the engine as a 744 cm³ air-cooled 90° transverse V-twin with 0.10 mm intake and 0.15 mm exhaust valve clearance, 1100 ± 100 rpm idle speed, a dry single-disc clutch, a mechanical 5-speed gearbox, and an 8/33 Cardan final-drive ratio of 1:4.825. Fuel delivery is Weber-Marelli electronic injection through a 36 mm diffuser.
The Owner's Manual adds the digital instrument-panel material, including clock adjustment, total and trip odometers, outside-air-temperature display, maintenance indication, the Trip Fuel reserve-distance function, and unit selection. This retains the owner-level operating and display information while the Service Station Manual takes the electrical system much further into repair and diagnosis.
Electrical coverage includes the General Wiring Diagram, Components Arrangement, harness-routing Tables A–G, ECU and instrument-panel pin-outs, service-warning reset, and fault-finding for the engine-speed, throttle-position, engine-temperature, air-temperature, lambda, oil-pressure, neutral, clutch, side-stand, fall, fuel-level, and speed sensors. Repair Scope and Factory Procedures
Factory procedures cover jobs commonly sent to a workshop: engine removal and refitting, fuel-tank and air-box removal, throttle-body synchronization with AXONE 2000, fork removal/disassembly with seal and oil service, steering-bearing play adjustment, swingarm removal, rear-drive bevel-gear disassembly and setup, exhaust and lambda-sensor work, and fuel-tank/bodywork removal.
The final-drive section is especially detailed. It covers pinion and crown inspection, bearing and seal work, shim selection, tooth-contact checking, and dedicated tooling such as 19.92.88.00 for bevel-gear alignment, 19.92.61.00 for the bevel-pinion sealing ring, and 19.92.76.00 for the swingarm-holder bearing.
Several repair traps are called out directly in the factory procedures. The bevel pinion and crown are a matched pair and must carry the same stamped number; fitting a mismatched gear risks incorrect tooth contact and accelerated crown/pinion wear. During final-drive reassembly, the pinion-case oil-passage grooves must be positioned vertically rather than installed in an arbitrary orientation. Fork work also requires care around the fork-leg rim, upper-bushing seat, and O-rings, since damage to those areas can compromise the sealing surfaces during reassembly.
Scope matters here. P/N 981078 contains internal-engine and gearbox specifications and torque tables, but it does not provide separate full engine or gearbox overhaul chapters. Its repair procedures concentrate on maintenance, electrical/injection diagnosis, engine removal/refitting, suspension, swingarm and final drive, exhaust, bodywork, and pre-delivery work. The separate Parts List supplies exploded internal-engine, clutch, transmission, and gearbox assemblies for parts identification, not step-by-step overhaul instructions.
Maintenance and Technical Reference
Service data includes a scheduled maintenance chart through 60,000 km with 7,500 km interval columns, covering oil and filter service, spark plugs, valve-clearance adjustment, cylinder synchronization, brakes, steering, suspension, safety switches, and drivetrain fluids. Factory capacities include 1,780 cm³ engine oil with filter replacement, 1.0 L gearbox oil, and 170 cm³ transmission/final-drive oil. Lubricant references specify SAE 10W-60 engine oil, SAE 85W-90 gearbox oil, and SAE 85W-140 transmission oil.
Useful tightening values include 12 Nm for the engine-oil drain plugs, 80 Nm for the front wheel pin, 120 Nm for the rear wheel bolt/nut, 50 Nm for the front brake caliper, and 38 Nm for the lambda probe. The included Moto Guzzi publications are not identical on every specification: the Owner's Manual gives 20 Nm for spark-plug tightening, while Service Station Manual P/N 981078 lists the ignition spark-plug retainer at 25 Nm. Keeping that distinction visible is important when selecting the applicable specification for a repair.
Electrical reference data identifies a 12 V/12 Ah battery and 350 W generator. The fuse section maps six circuits A–F using 3 A, 15 A, and 30 A ratings for lighting/start-up, stop/tail/horn/indicators, permanent injection supply, injection services, main supply, and battery charging.
Fuel-system work, supported engine removal, brake-fluid service, battery work, and suspension or final-drive disassembly all carry factory safety cautions. Use the procedure and specification that matches the applicable publication and vehicle build before carrying out a repair.
