Kawasaki designed these books primarily for motorcycle mechanics in a properly equipped shop. Experienced owners can use them for routine maintenance and repair, but engine overhaul, hydraulic brake work, and electrical fault tracing assume sound mechanical knowledge and the correct measuring equipment.
This is not blanket 1976–1983 all-model coverage. The later volume covers the 1981 D4, F2, and H1 and adds a dedicated 1982 supplement for the F3 and H2; no 1983 model supplement is present. The earlier volume supplies factory procedures for the first-production KZ650 rather than every intervening model or configuration.
Engine, Fuel, and Drivetrain Repair
The later manual separates scheduled maintenance, non-scheduled diagnosis, and major disassembly. Engine sections address camshafts, cam chain guides and tensioners, the cylinder head and block, valves and seats, pistons and rings, crankshaft and connecting-rod bearing selection, the primary chain, clutch, transmission, and wet-sump lubrication system. Engine-removal, top-end, bottom-end, and crankcase-split flow charts support the teardown chapters, while related service tables give inspection limits and assembly data.
Fuel-system coverage runs from tank, tap, cap, and vacuum-switch testing through carburetor service fuel level, idle adjustment, and vacuum synchronization. The 1982 supplement documents the change to four Mikuni BS32 constant-vacuum carburetors, including diaphragm and vacuum-piston inspection, float-valve and jet service, carburetor separation, reassembly, and visual synchronization. It also records the revised clutch-release mechanism and permanent-magnet starter motor.
Kawasaki warns against placing shim stock beneath a valve shim or grinding the shim, since either practice can let it dislodge or fracture at engine speed. During crankcase assembly, liquid gasket applied outside the marked areas can obstruct oil passages and lead to engine seizure; the factory-machined crankcase halves must also remain a matched set.
Chassis, Electrical, and Diagnostic Content
Chassis specifications distinguish the D, F, and H layouts instead of treating them as interchangeable. Coverage accounts for cast tubeless and wire-spoke tube-type wheels, dual- and single-disc front brakes, rear disc and drum systems, and model-specific pneumatic-fork data. Factory procedures cover wheel and bearing service, tire and rim work, drive-chain and wheel-coupling repair, caliper and master-cylinder disassembly, brake-line bleeding, steering-stem bearings, front forks, rear shocks, and swing-arm needle bearings.
The 1981 electrical chapters cover battery and charging-system tests, pickup-coil and transistorized-ignition diagnosis, the electric starter, lighting, horn, automatic turn-signal canceling, hazard operation, and the H-model low-fuel warning system. The first-issue shop manual adds contact-breaker point adjustment, dwell testing, static and dynamic ignition timing, and early dynamo, rectifier, regulator, starter, and lighting checks.
Five full wiring diagrams are labeled KZ650-D4, KZ650-F2, KZ650-H1, KZ650-F3, and KZ650-H2. The electrical chapters add the Low Fuel Warning Circuit, while the appendix supplies problem/cause troubleshooting for starting, low- and high-speed running, overheating, clutch and shifting faults, abnormal engine or drivetrain noise, handling, brakes, oil pressure, and battery charging.
Specifications, Tools, and Safe Workshop Use
The specification and service-data sections cover engine performance, gear ratios, carburetor settings, compression and wear criteria, transmission backlash and clearances, brake and suspension limits, torque tables, locking-agent locations, approved lubricants and fluids, and electrical test values.
