Engine Repair and Timing-Belt Work

The engine sections extend beyond routine maintenance to camshaft and rocker-arm inspection, valve-seat work, crankcase separation, connecting-rod service, and internal gearbox repair. Separate valve-reassembly instructions distinguish the 749/749 Dark from the 749S.

The DDS belt-tension procedure permits measurement with the engine installed. Its illustrated measurement locations and accompanying timing checks give technicians a defined reference for assessing belt setup rather than relying on belt feel alone.

Component-specific torque tables include tightening stages and lubricant or thread-locking requirements. The M8 crankcase screws, for example, have a staged specification rather than a single universal tightening value.

The clutch-cover installation section identifies an oil-seal damage risk at the primary-drive gear and specifies protective bush 88700.5665. This is a component-specific assembly precaution, distinct from a general instruction to use suitable tools.

Fuel Injection and Electrical Fault Tracing

The Marelli IAW 5AM2 ECU and instrument panel communicate over the CAN network. The manual explains their shared sensor information and provides injection-relay continuity checks, sensor descriptions, and instrument-panel diagnostic indications.

Selected Power, Lubrication, and Clutch Specifications

The engine specifications list maximum crankshaft power for the 749S as 81 kW at 10,500 rpm, separately from the test-bench power figure. The lubricant table specifies 3.4 liters for the engine sump and oil filter.

For dry-clutch assessment, the component-inspection section gives a minimum friction-plate thickness of 2.3 mm and a maximum clearance of 0.6 mm between the clutch housing and drive plate. These illustrate the manual’s component-level inspection limits.
