This set does not treat every CR80R as the same machine. The 1984 book is specific to the 79.7 cc liquid-cooled two-stroke engine and PE67A carburetor. The 1985–2002 CR80R material covers the later 82.9 cc engine, using PE67B for 1985, PE68A for 1986, PE68B for 1987–1995, and PE68D for 1996–2002. The final PDF continues into the 84.7 cc CR85R and CR85RB, with PE68E carburetion for 2003–2004 and PWK10A for 2005–2007. It also separates the standard R chassis from the larger-wheel RB configuration.

ATAC coverage applies specifically to the 1984 and 1985 systems. Those chapters describe head-pipe and chamber inspection, governor and centrifugal-weight service, rocker arm, rack, upper and lower cams, valve positioning, and final adjustment. The 1984 Technical Features section explains how the Automatic Controlled Torque Amplification Chamber changes exhaust volume with engine speed, giving technicians the system theory needed to diagnose governor, rack, cam, and valve-travel faults.

Engine and Drivetrain Repair

The repair depth runs from routine competition maintenance to a split-case engine job. Top-end sections cover the cylinder head, cylinder, piston, ring, pin, small-end bearing, and reed valve, together with the related bore, groove, end-gap, clearance, and wear-limit data. Oversize-piston and cylinder-reconditioning references are included where applicable.

Lower-end coverage addresses clutch removal and assembly, kickstarter and shift-linkage service, crankcase separation and assembly, transmission inspection, crankshaft work, and bearing and oil-seal replacement. Most sections open with an assembly illustration, service information, specifications, required tools, and a system-specific troubleshooting chart before moving into the detailed repair procedures.

Two manual-specific repair traps are called out clearly. The 1984 reboring notes warn that an incorrectly restored exhaust-port bridge radius can cause piston seizure. In the later top-end procedure, rotating the cylinder during installation can catch the piston ring on a port and break it.

Chassis, Brakes, Cooling, and Electrical

The chassis chapters make the major year breaks easy to follow. The 1985 front brake is a cable-operated leading-shoe design; the front hydraulic-disc system applies after 1985. The rear remains cable-operated through 1991, with rear hydraulic-disc service added after that point.

Hydraulic-brake chapters cover fluid replacement and air bleeding, pad and disc inspection, master cylinders, calipers, brake hoses, and pedal components. Fork and rear-suspension procedures are also separated where the 1995 design differs from the post-1995 assemblies, including shock, linkage, swingarm, steering, and wheel service.

Cooling-system repair includes fault diagnosis, system testing, coolant replacement, radiator and cap inspection, water-pump service, and water-seal replacement. Ignition coverage progresses from alternator and CDI checks in the early books to ICM, exciter-coil, ignition-pulse-generator, and peak-voltage testing in the later volume. Cable and Harness Routing layouts and complete Wiring Diagrams support accurate electrical and control-cable reassembly.

The general troubleshooting sections address no-start and hard-start conditions, low power, poor response at low, idle, or high engine speeds, and common handling complaints.
