Model Coverage and Addenda

The 1970 Z50A publication applies to the rigid-frame configuration shown in the manual. Its tables separate the General Export version from two U.S.A. production states, including changes in dimensions, secondary reduction, lighting equipment, and wiring. The Z50A material is limited to those listed configurations; this set is not a blanket 1969-1999 Z50 publication.

The Z50R manual is based on the 1979 model, with base pages dated September 1978. Honda's September 1980 addendum supplies the 1980-1981 changes, while the September 1981 addendum adds 1982-only information. Carburetor identification progresses from PA03B for the base model to PA03C for 1980-1981 and PA03D for 1982, keeping year-specific fuel-system data separate. The final addendum also updates lubrication, final-drive, ignition, cylinder-head, camshaft, and valve information.

Engine and Transmission Documentation

The Z50A engine section goes beyond routine tune-up work. It covers the trochoid oil pump and dual oil route, cylinder-head inspection, valve-seat cutting and lapping, valve-guide replacement and reaming, cylinder inspection and reboring, piston and ring service, clutch adjustment, crankshaft checks, transmission gear inspection, shift mechanism service, kick-starter work, and carburetor tuning across idle, intermediate, and high-speed operation.

The Z50R chapters distinguish jobs that can be completed with the engine in the frame from those requiring a full teardown. Oil-pump, clutch, and A.C. generator service remain in-frame operations; internal transmission and crankshaft repair requires engine removal and crankcase separation. Factory troubleshooting traces hard starting, poor output, smoke, abnormal engine noise, clutch slip or drag, shifting faults, and transmission jump-out to component-level causes.

Chassis, Electrical, and Diagram Coverage

Z50R chassis procedures include front and rear wheel removal, brake disassembly and inspection, steering-stem and bearing-race service, fork disassembly, swingarm removal, and rear shock-absorber disassembly. Electrical sections cover contact-breaker inspection and timing, ignition-coil output and continuity checks, condenser testing, and the engine-stop-switch circuit.

Representative illustrations include the Z50A Engine Assembly Diagram; General Export and frame-specific U.S.A. wiring diagrams; the Z50R oil-flow schematic; cable and wire-harness routing views; the transmission/crankshaft/kick-starter assembly view; and front and rear wheel/brake/suspension exploded views.

Specifications, Tools, and Repair Cautions

The tables provide component torque data, fluid and lubricant information, maintenance schedules, adjustment settings, ignition test values, and standard-versus-service-limit dimensions for the covered assemblies. The Z50A section identifies special tool set 07000-04511, including flywheel puller 07016-00102 and clutch service tool 07038-01101. Z50R references include clutch outer holder 07923-0400000, flywheel puller 07933-0010000, and shock absorber compressor 07959-3290001. The 1982 addendum specifies valve-seat pilot bar 07781-0010100 and grinding stones 07780-0010100 and 07780-0014000.

Assembly cautions are specific: rotating the Z50R gearshift spindle during installation can score the oil-seal lip, while tightening the 1982 carburetor air screw against its seat can damage both parts. The addendum also warns that high-altitude jetting left installed below its intended elevation range can overheat and damage the engine. Work involving gasoline, a hot exhaust, running-engine tests, or raised wheels should follow the manual's ventilation, fire, eye-protection, and secure-support precautions.
