Indian's 99–01 Models Service & Procedures Guide, Revision C (August 2002) covers service and repair procedures for the 1999–2001 Indian Chief with the 88 c.i. V-twin.

Engine Service and Rocker Box Repair

Chapters break down pre-delivery inspections, primary maintenance, interval servicing, and component rebuilding. The Primary, Interval, and Renewal Service checklists reference engine and transmission oil service, air-filter care, fuel-system inspection, and control-cable lubrication.

Rocker box instructions distinguish upper and center gasket leaks from work requiring lower-box removal, with separate procedures for the front and rear cylinders. They address hydraulic tappet bleed-down and rocker-arm inspection, supported by torque-sequence photos. A full internal engine overhaul is outside this guide's scope.

S&S Super E and California Emissions

The carburetor chapter separates California jetting from 49-state configurations with a carburetor restrictor. Rebuilding covers the float needle and seat, accelerator-pump diaphragm, throttle shaft, bleed passages, and enrichener. Float-height views identify the measuring points.

California emissions coverage explains the charcoal canister, vacuum spring diaphragm, solenoid valve, one-way valve, and pressure-relief valve. Hose-connection photographs show the routing between components.

Clutch Service and Transmission Rebuilding

The diaphragm-spring clutch and wet-clutch friction-plate assembly have separate procedures, including plate and hub inspection, shimming, and judder-spring details. The manual warns that incorrect diaphragm-spring adjustment can cause slipping, excessive wear, or premature clutch failure.

Primary-belt deflection and sprocket-alignment views accompany the belt procedures. Starter and Charging-System Diagnosis

Battery care distinguishes conventional lead-acid and Yuasa maintenance-free batteries. The starter voltage-drop tests cover both power and ground circuits, helping isolate cable or connection faults before replacing the starter.

Regulator-performance, stator AC-output, grounded-stator, shorted-stator, and current-draw tests include the related electrical test specifications. This electrical section provides testing procedures and tables; vehicle wiring diagrams are outside its scope.

Chassis Service and Reference Data

Wheel-bearing coverage pairs end-play measurements with a center-hub-spacer length and part-number table. Steering service includes bearing lubrication and the fall-away check. Rear-shock coverage distinguishes Progressive and KT/Sway-A-Way units, with inspection and preload adjustment rather than dealer-level internal rebuilding.

Technical data is organized into tables listing fluid requirements, tire pressures, and engine tune-up specifications. Transmission gear ratios, brake wear limits, and the component-specific bolt-torque audit provide further reference data.

Brake work and lifting the motorcycle require the workshop precautions described in the manual.
