The 5.9L diesel material extends well beyond routine maintenance. It includes smoke-diagnosis charts, valve adjustment, turbocharger-related checks, fuel-transfer and high-pressure delivery systems, rail and injector service, water-separator components, intake-air heaters, and early-versus-late APPS and fuel-filter-housing arrangements. The injector chapter identifies factory tools 9010 and 9015 for injector and high-pressure connector removal.

Drivetrain, Chassis, and Electrical Depth

Manual-transmission chapters cover removal, complete teardown, synchronizers, shafts, forks, bearings, inspection, reassembly, and separate 2WD/4WD installation details. Automatic-transmission chapters add power-flow diagrams, hydraulic schematics, pressure-port testing, clutch and servo air tests, valve-body and oil-pump service, geartrain and clutch-pack overhaul, band adjustment where applicable, and adaptive-learning procedures. The dedicated overhaul chapters cover 46RE, 48RE, and 45RFE/545RFE units; introductory and maintenance material identifies 47RE applications, but there is no separate 47RE overhaul chapter.

Axle sections document noise and vibration diagnosis, shaft and seal replacement, differential teardown, ring-and-pinion installation, depth and backlash adjustment, bearing preload, contact-pattern checks, and limited-slip service. Steering coverage includes the steering column, linkage, steering gear, hydraulic pump, hoses, and related diagnosis and adjustment procedures.

The electrical material is organized for actual fault tracing, not just component location. Circuit diagrams are supported by connector pin-outs, splice indexes, ground locations, module descriptions, and component-location illustrations. Representative sections include Fuel/Ignition System, Transmission Control System, All Wheel Antilock Brakes, Airbag System, Trailer Tow, and Connector Pin-Outs.

Separate body and HVAC chapters cover water-leak and wind-noise diagnosis, plastic-panel repair, buzz/squeak/rattle diagnosis, doors and glass, R-134a system testing and service, and single- or dual-zone HVAC actuator repair and calibration.

Scope and Service Notes

Mechanical troubleshooting, component tests, wiring information, scan-tool functions, and many programming or calibration procedures are contained in this PDF. Full code-by-code electronic diagnostic trees are referred to separate Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures or Body Diagnostic Procedures publications, so this file should not be sold as including every DTC decision tree.

Several repair cautions are unusually specific. The axle chapters warn that excessive pinion preload cannot be corrected by backing off the nut; the collapsible spacer must be replaced. Transmission installation requires a torque-converter seating check, and the manual warns that converter-to-driveplate bolts of the wrong length can damage the internal clutch surface. Diesel fuel-system cleanliness is equally critical: contamination can rapidly wear injectors or plug nozzle holes, while improvised injector removal can damage the injector.

Support the truck at the specified hoist points and isolate high-pressure diesel fuel, airbag, and refrigerant systems before related repair work.
