Diesel coverage: AAZ and 1Z material includes wiring, maintenance data and transmission applications. The engine mechanical and fuel-injection repair sections are for ABA and AAA; a dedicated diesel engine overhaul section is not included.

Engine, Drivetrain and Electrical Repair Coverage

The following selected coverage highlights show the main workshop areas rather than a complete contents list. Other documented topics include sunroof alignment and seat upholstery repairs.

• Engine mechanical: Engine removal, cylinder-head work, crankshaft and piston inspection, ABA toothed-belt replacement, and VR6 valve-timing checks and adjustment.
• Motronic diagnosis: DTC tables, output tests, measuring-value blocks, readiness checks, fuel-pressure testing, injector checks, and ignition-system diagnosis.

Engine Repair and Motronic Fault Tracing

Step-by-step procedures cover ABA toothed-drive-belt replacement and VR6 valve-timing adjustment. Cylinder-head and bottom-end sections include inspection limits, piston dimensions, lubrication checks and cooling-system service.

The ABA timing instructions identify a valve-to-piston contact risk when the camshaft is moved with the belt removed and the pistons incorrectly positioned.

Injection and emissions: Separate diagnostic material distinguishes VAG 1551 procedures from generic OBD II checks. It covers EVAP, PCV, oxygen sensors and secondary-air injection, including pump-relay, combi-valve and check-valve testing. Resistance graphs connect sensor readings with the relevant test conditions.

Transmission Measurements and ABS Procedures

The 02A material goes beyond removal: input-shaft, output-shaft and differential adjustments are supported by measurement procedures and a Table of Adjustment Shims. Automatic-transmission sections provide a Stall Speed Chart, electrical test tables and internal assembly references.

01M valve-body scope: The instructions cover removal, installation and conductor-strip service. A contaminated or faulty valve body is specified for replacement rather than internal overhaul. Damage to the conductor-strip locating points can also require valve-body replacement.

Teves 04 and Teves 20 GI have distinct diagnostic sections. For Teves 20 GI ABS/EDL, the hydraulic service material explains when an emptied reservoir requires the diagnostic Basic Setting function in addition to the applicable bleeding procedure.

Circuit Diagrams and Component Identification

Wiring layouts and component references support troubleshooting and routine maintenance by linking components to harness connectors, grounds and relay references. Examples include Motronic ECM and injector circuits, coolant-fan controls, ABS/EDL wiring, and central-locking and anti-theft circuits.

Power windows, cruise control, heated seats and wagon rear-wiper circuits are also documented. The AAZ fan reference No. 4/1 is a wiring-diagram identifier. The load-reduction relay’s 18 marking is its production control number, not a relay-panel position.

Airbag circuits and instrument-cluster memory-switch connections are identified separately. Follow the manual’s electrical-isolation and airbag precautions before working on these systems.

Compression and ATF Test Data Preview

For ABA compression testing with engine oil at least 30°C and the throttle fully open, the manual lists 10–13 bar for a new engine and a 7.5 bar wear limit.

The 01M ATF-level procedure specifies a final checking temperature of 35–45°C, with the vehicle level and the engine running. This is the checking window, distinct from the cooler starting condition described in the procedure.
