Technical Documentation and System Coverage
The two volumes do different jobs. The System Description and Operation manual explains how the 3.0-liter inline-six Td6 common-rail diesel and 4.4-liter V8 gasoline systems are built and controlled. It traces air, fuel, lubrication, cooling, emissions, CAN-bus communication, and power flow through the drivetrain. The Service Procedures manual then provides workshop operations, inspection criteria, assembly notes, and tooling for the repairs covered by its NAS edition.
Variant identification is unusually detailed. The text separates NAS from all-except-NAS fuel-system layouts, LHD and RHD steering and HVAC arrangements, low-line and high-line climate control, halogen and Xenon ride-height sensor configurations, fuel-burning-heater installations, and Japan-specific navigation hardware. The air-suspension chapter also records the production change at VIN 106310, distinguishing the earlier and later pressure-relief arrangements and the related control strategy.
Coverage is not identical for both engines. LRL0424ENG describes the Td6 and V8 powertrains, including the GM 5L40-E used with Td6 and the ZF 5HP24 used with V8. LRL0477NAS contains the full V8 engine repair and overhaul chapter, plus ZF fluid, selector, seal, cooler, valve-body, and unit-removal procedures. It retains Td6 maintenance and several Td6-specific chassis operations, but it does not provide a parallel Td6 internal-engine repair chapter. GM 5L40-E coverage is descriptive and diagnostic rather than a workshop overhaul, and neither automatic-transmission section contains a complete internal rebuild sequence. The separate full Electrical Circuit Diagrams publication is not included in this two-PDF set.
Diagrams, Specifications, and Shop-Level Detail
Useful visual references include the Td6 Fuel System Schematic, Transfer Box Exploded View, ZF 5HP24 Sectional View, Dynamic Stability Control System Control Diagram, Communication Data Buses Control Diagram, and SRS Control Diagram. Component-location drawings and connector/pin information add the context needed for subsystem diagnosis.
Factory tool callouts are carried directly into the repair procedures. Examples include the LRT-12-223 and LRT-12-227 V8 timing fixtures, LRT-19-006 fuel-system test equipment, and LRT-60-033 hub-bearing tooling. Many electronic repairs specify TestBook/T4 before disconnection or replacement, followed by the required configuration, adaptation, or calibration work.
The cautions are often as useful as the tables. The V8 head-gasket procedures warn that oil or coolant left in the head-bolt holes can damage the cylinder block during tightening. The NV225 ratio-control actuator section warns that rotating or withdrawing its lead screw can cause internal transfer-box damage. Fuel, brake, refrigerant, air-suspension, SRS, and heavy drivetrain repair should be handled with the specified isolation, support, recovery, and diagnostic equipment.
