Model and Workshop Coverage
The powertrain information is specific to the covered builds rather than a generic 1.3-liter summary. Separate tuning data is provided for 12A2BG03 carburetor/manual, 12A2BG05 carburetor/automatic, 12A2DF75 SPi/manual, 12A2DF76 SPi/automatic and 12A2EF77 high-compression SPi engines. The procedures assume workshop-level skills and equipment, making this manual best suited to professional technicians and experienced Mini owners who are comfortable working from illustrated factory repair sequences, wear limits and numbered service-tool references.
Internal engine work is backed by a red/green/yellow main-bearing selection chart, a Plastigauge clearance check, component inspection limits, adjustment data, torque tables, capacities and approved-fluid specifications. The manual identifies the tools where they matter, including fuel-pressure gauge 18G 1500, clutch centralizer 18G 684, automatic-transmission test equipment 18G 677Z and steering ball-housing tool 18G 1278. Most major operations also carry a Service Repair Number and repair-time reference.
Diagnostics, Diagrams and Scope
Automatic transmission coverage is unusually deep for a single vehicle manual. It combines mechanical power-flow diagrams and line-pressure/lubrication diagrams with shift-speed checks, selector and kick-down adjustments, starter-inhibitor checks, brake-band setting and a structured road-test chart. Electrical material adds separate carburetor and SPi power-distribution diagrams, the engine-management circuit, and wire-harness and ground-location views. The wiring-diagram section is specifically identified for 1992 and later Mini models fitted with anti-theft alarms, an important limit when matching the diagrams to an earlier or differently equipped car.
The steering chapter has its own serial break: racks fitted from VIN 068303 on RHD cars or VIN 067688 on LHD cars are identified as non-overhaulable. Body coverage is for installed components and trim - including glazing, closures, sunroof and Cabriolet hood systems - rather than structural collision repair. Rover directs users to the separate AKM 6845 Mechanical Fault Finding Manual and AKM 7181 Body Repair Manual for those companion subjects; neither is part of this PDF.
The factory cautions point out repair traps that are easy to miss. Forcing the automatic governor housing into place before the forward clutch is fully engaged on its hub splines can damage the clutch plates, while withdrawing the steering rack from the wrong end allows the rack teeth to damage the bush. Fuel-system work, ignition testing, brake hydraulics and under-vehicle repair should be carried out with the isolation, cleanliness and support precautions stated in the manual.
