Rover Manual Features & Content Preview

  • Covers the New Range Rover from its 1995 introduction, with explicit up-to/from-99MY splits and 2000MY-specific additions, including 4.0- and 4.6-liter Land Rover V8s and the 2.5-liter BMW turbo-diesel.
  • BMW diesel engine coverage reaches compression testing, engine removal, cylinder-head and valve work, injection-pump timing, oil-pump overhaul, pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft bearings, and timing chains.
  • V8 repair sections address engine removal, front cover and oil pump work, rocker-shaft overhaul, tappets, cylinder-head gaskets, and the revised timing drive, with separate procedures where the 99MY change matters.
  • R380 manual, ZF 4HP22/4HP24 automatic, and Borg Warner transfer-box chapters cover removal and installation, seals, cooling circuits, selectors, the automatic valve body and solenoids, and electronic controls.
  • Steering pressure testing and bleeding sit alongside Electronic Air Suspension depressurization, leak testing, calibration, air-spring and valve-block repair, plus ABS bleeding, accumulator, booster, caliper, and sensor work.
  • GEMS, Bosch Motronic 5.2.1, BMW Digital Diesel Electronics (DDE), advanced EVAPS, and 2000MY North American Specification (NAS) secondary-air injection are separated by build, with TestBook references, control schematics, fault codes, and drive-cycle checks.

Rover Technical Communication publication LRL0326ENG is a 1,361-page, two-volume PDF of the factory New Range Rover (P38A) Workshop Manual, copyrighted in 1999. It supersedes Workshop Manual VDR100370 and Body Repair Manual LRL0085. Written to assist skilled technicians, it also directs owners to limit their own repair work to non-safety-critical components and leave steering, brake, suspension, and SRS work to a Range Rover dealer.

Build-Specific Engine and Driveline Coverage

The V8 material separates the Sagem-Lucas GEMS system used up to 99MY from Bosch Motronic 5.2.1 from 99MY, including the related sensors, ignition hardware, fuel delivery, evaporative-emissions equipment, and ECM interfaces. Specification data also distinguishes high- and low-compression V8s and NAS/non-NAS equipment. BMW diesel material covers the turbocharged, intercooled six-cylinder engine, DDE control, EGR and non-EGR layouts, pump timing, injectors, glow plugs, turbocharger, and intercooler. Separate cooling chapters cover fault diagnosis, drain/refill work, radiator, water pump, fan, and thermostat service for both engine families.

Transmission identification is specific: the 2.5 diesel and 4.0 gasoline engines use the ZF 4HP22 automatic, while the 4.6 gasoline engine uses the 4HP24. The R380 five-speed chapter covers transmission removal, the output seal, selector remote housing, and oil coolers. Borg Warner transfer-box coverage addresses the ECU, ratio-control motor, shaft seals, and unit removal, with up-to/from-99MY procedures. The R380 material is not a complete internal rebuild manual.

Chassis, Brake, Body, and Climate-Control Work

Front and rear axle sections cover differential and axle removal, pinion and case seals, hubs, drive shafts, swivel-hub checking and adjustment, and ball joints. Electronic Air Suspension (EAS) content includes height settings, transportation precautions, calibration, leak testing, air-line service, the compressor, reservoir, dryer, ECU, height sensors, air springs, and solenoid valve block. Steering fault diagnosis adds hydraulic pressure testing, wheel alignment, steering-box centralization, pump replacement, and bleeding.

Brake content covers up-to/from-99MY ABS layouts, hydraulic depressurization and bleeding, accumulator precharge checks, the booster, pump and motor, discs, pads, calipers, parking brake, and wheel sensors. SRS material distinguishes single-point and distributed systems and includes crash-sensor inspection, rotary-coupler precautions, airbag modules, seat-belt pretensioners, and from-99MY side airbags. The A/C chapter includes recovery, recycling, recharging, leak and performance tests, with an ambient-temperature-sensor split at VIN 381430/381431.

The body-repair portion supplies chassis dimensions, welding and panel-replacement guidance, sealing charts, corrosion-protection materials, and repair sections for structural posts, side members, roof, quarter panels, load floor, and rear crossmember. Heating and ventilation fault diagnosis, blend-flap servos, heater matrix, blower, seats, wipers, BeCM-controlled electrical equipment, navigation, and instruments remain part of the same publication.

Factory Reference Data, Schematics, and Tools

Maintenance schedules, NAS and non-NAS lubricant requirements, fluid capacities, engine tuning data, component-specific torque tables, wear limits, clearances, and electrical test values are collected ahead of the repair chapters and within the applicable systems. Named graphics include the pre-99MY and from-99MY engine-management schematics, transfer-box and electronic automatic-transmission control schematics, the ABS control schematic, SRS system schematic, BeCM control schematic, and navigation control diagram.

Factory procedures identify special tools by number, including diesel compression-test kit LRT-19-007, crankshaft timing pin LRT-12-108, BMW camshaft holding tool LRT-12-112, EAS air-line cutting tool LRT-60-002, and swivel-hub fixtures LRT-54-006/1 and LRT-54-006/2. TestBook is specified for EAS calibration and selected engine, emissions, immobilization, and control-system tasks.

The cautions are component-specific. Turning the steering wheel with the intermediate shaft removed can damage the rotary coupler and compromise the SRS and steering-wheel switches; mishandling EAS air pipes during disconnection can damage the lines and create leaks. The manual also documents correct jacking, lift, towing, fuel-system, refrigerant, pressurized-suspension, brake, and SRS precautions before repair work begins.

This PDF contains the workshop manual itself. Rover specifies Electrical Troubleshooting Manual LRL0329 and Electrical Circuit Diagrams YVB101590, 2nd Edition, as companion publications; those separate books are not included here.
