Harley-Davidson Manual Features & Content Preview
- Document identity: A 1,293-page PDF set—Service Manual P/N 99483-01 (655 pages), Electrical Diagnostics P/N 99495-01 (393), Police Service Supplement P/N 99483-01SP (153), FLTRSEI2 Service Supplement P/N 99488-01 (91), plus a one-page master contents sheet.
- Model coverage: Applies to carbureted and fuel-injected 2001 FLT Touring variants across the FLHR/FLHRC, FLHT/FLHTC/FLHTCU, and FLTR families. VIN tables also distinguish Shrine, sidecar, police, and 1550 EFI FLTRSEI2 configurations.
- Engine and driveline repair: Documents Twin Cam 88 engine removal and installation, top- and bottom-end overhaul, cam and oil-pump service, starter repair, clutch and primary-drive work, final-belt alignment, and internal transmission service.
- Chassis procedures: Handles wheel and alignment work, brake master-cylinder and caliper repair, hydraulic bleeding, forks, steering-head bearings, air suspension, swingarm service, fairings, Tour-Pak, and exhaust components.
- Carbureted and EFI systems: Separates carburetor, enrichener, vacuum fuel valve, tank, and evaporative-emissions work from EFI pump, sender, sensor, injector, pressure-regulator, induction-module, and ECM procedures.
- Electrical fault tracing: Provides starting and charging tests, speedometer diagnosis, TSM/TSSM troubleshooting, carbureted and EFI DTC paths, Scanalyzer routines, audio symptom charts, cruise diagnostics, connector views, and model-specific wiring sheets.
- Supplement coverage: Adds police lighting, siren/PA, air-horn, charging, and harness information, plus FLTRSEI2 bodywork, CD-changer, TSSM, siren-battery, and wiring differences.
Mechanical Repair and Overhaul Coverage
The 655-page service manual is the mechanical core of the set for the 1450 cc Twin Cam 88. It documents motorcycle stripping and reassembly, engine removal and installation, and separate top- and bottom-end overhaul paths. Subassembly coverage reaches into rocker arms, pushrods and lifters, cylinder heads, valves and guides, pistons and cylinders, cam support plate, cam chains and tensioners, oil pump, crankcase, and flywheel/connecting-rod assembly. This is factory repair material rather than a maintenance-only handbook.
Drive and transmission work extends through clutch-pack inspection and reassembly, primary-chaincase and starter-jackshaft service, secondary-belt alignment, shifter cam and forks, mainshaft/countershaft disassembly, main-drive-gear replacement, and transmission case/oil-pan repair.
Electrical System & Security Module Diagnostics
The 393-page diagnostics manual separates carbureted ignition-module faults from EFI ECM faults. Starting, charging, instrumentation, TSM/TSSM, engine-management, audio, and cruise problems are mapped through symptom trees, DTC charts, component circuits, connector tables, and tool-specific tests.
TSM/TSSM material explains vehicle-delivery configuration, turn-signal cancellation, bank-angle shutdown, security arming and disarming, code retrieval, weak key-fob signals, security-lamp faults, siren operation, and starter-disable logic. EFI diagnosis adds Scanalyzer checks, ECM breakout-box testing, fuel-system electrical and pressure tests, idle-speed control, misfire isolation, and sensor, injector, ignition-coil, and fuel-pump circuits. Referenced test equipment includes the HD-42682 TSM/ignition breakout box, HD-41198 EFI breakout box, and HD-41354 speedometer tester.
Electrical, fuel, and brake work can create short-circuit, fire, and loss-of-control hazards. Follow the manual’s battery-isolation, fuel-pressure, lifting, and brake-system warnings before testing or disassembly.
Police and FLTRSEI2 Supplement Coverage
The police supplement adds police maintenance and chassis details, pole and pursuit lamps, Whelen siren/PA hardware, microphone/PTT circuits, air-horn setup, connector locations, charging differences, and fuel-gauge service. Its appendix separates domestic and international FLHTP-I diagrams from FLHP-I/FLHPE destination wiring and marks the late-2001 FLHP security-upgrade harness arrangement.
The FLTRSEI2 supplement identifies the 1550 EFI configuration and concentrates on its unique chassis and electrical equipment: Tour-Pak and backrests, rear-light bracket, spoiler, Tour-Pak lamp, fairing lowers, CD changer, TSSM, siren battery, fuses, and dedicated wiring. Each supplement documents only its model-specific changes and refers back to the main FLT service manual for unchanged chapters.
Technical Specifications & Assembly Limits
The data sections provide manufacturing tolerances, service wear limits, torque tables and tightening sequences, fluid capacities, wheel and alignment checks, brake and suspension specifications, clutch and belt adjustment data, transmission limits, electrical test values, battery load testing, bulb charts, and terminal repair for Deutsch, Amp Multilock, Packard, sealed butt-splice, and Amp connectors.
Named references include the Charging System Circuit (Typical), Turn Signal Circuit: FLHR/I/CI, Crankshaft Position Sensor and Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Diagram, Cruise Charts A-I, FLHTC Ultra-I Complete Audio Circuit, and FLHTP-I Security Circuit sheets. The Electrical Diagnostics wiring section alone supplies 49 indexed wiring-diagram sheets for domestic and international FLT configurations, including FLHR-family, Ultra, police, audio, cruise, security, and sidecar systems.
Two repair cautions show the manual’s workshop depth. Installing a valve-stem seal without the protective capsule and HD-34643A installer can cut or distort the seal and damage the guide. During primary-chaincase installation, unprotected mainshaft splines can ruin the new lip seal before the case is seated.
Scope note: This set contains factory service and diagnostic procedures, not a parts catalog. For exploded part-number lookup and additional component relationships, use our vintage Harley-Davidson parts documentation guide as a separate reference.
