Massey-Ferguson Manual Features & Content Preview

  • Covers selected Massey Ferguson MF 150, MF 165, and MF 175 front-axle and steering service, with separate procedures for Row Crop and Dual Tricycle layouts. Engine coverage is section-specific: G-176/GB-176 specifications apply to MF 165/3165/MF 65 applications; AG4.212/AG4.236 material includes MF 165/MF 175/MF 180 linkage applications; and the AD4.203 diesel section includes the MF 165 plus related Massey-Ferguson machines.
  • Massey-Ferguson service-manual material, including Form No. 1448 822M1 supplemental/change information for the Perkins AG4.212 and AG4.236 gasoline engines. Individual sections show 1/67 and 9/67 revision marks, while the supplemental sheet is marked 3/79.
  • 150-page PDF containing Front Axle and Steering Part 12, G-176/GB-176 engine specifications, general cylinder-head/block/cooling service procedures, the Perkins AG4.212/AG4.236 engine section, and AD4.203 diesel specifications with the opening portion of its overhaul section.
  • Factory data includes a 1500 psi steering-pump relief setting, 76–85 ft-lb front-wheel nut torque, 0.004–0.008 in. G-176/GB-176 crankshaft end play, 30–60 psi AG4.212/AG4.236 oil pressure, and AD4.203 injector opening pressure of 2500 psi for used injectors after 25 hours or 2720 psi for new injectors.
  • This file is not the complete MF 165 service set shown in the title-page index. Clutch, 6- and 8-speed transmissions, Multi-Power transmission, differential/rear axle, PTO, and internal hydraulic-system parts are not included. The AD4.203 overhaul material reaches cylinder-head, valve, and valve-guide service rather than the later indexed overhaul pages.

Inside the Manual: Steering, Front Axle & Engine Systems

The strongest tractor-specific coverage is the MF 150/MF 165/MF 175 front axle and steering section. It separates diesel and gasoline steering-pump arrangements, MF 150 versus MF 165/MF 175 pump service, Row Crop versus Dual Tricycle pedestal and axle layouts, and the different steering-cylinder/control-valve arrangements. Hydraulic steering specifications call for Massey-Ferguson M-1110 fluid and a 1500 psi relief setting. The manual also gives toe-in, axle-pivot end play, wheel-bearing torque, drag-link dimensions, steering-valve adjustment, and troubleshooting for restricted steering, front-wheel shimmy, loss of power assist, and unequal turning from side to side.

Factory repair procedures cover steering-pump removal and overhaul, hydraulic cylinder and control-valve repair, pedestal-shaft removal and rebushing, steering-gear housing service, front-axle removal, wheel-bearing adjustment, and steering-system setup. Pedestal bushings can be line-reamed with special tool MFN 182. For front-axle or pedestal work, the tractor must be securely supported, and steering hydraulic pressure should be relieved before lines are opened.

Engine Specifications, Overhaul Data & System Testing

The G-176/GB-176 section documents the 176 cu. in. four-cylinder gasoline and LP-gas engine family, including carburetor and vaporizer applications, ignition timing, Delco-Remy starter/generator data, lubrication, and cooling specifications. Useful overhaul values include 70–75 ft-lb cylinder-head torque, 0.004–0.008 in. crankshaft end play, 5 U.S. qt crankcase capacity without a filter or 6 qt with a filter change, a 7 psi radiator cap, and a 160°F thermostat setting. General-engine sections cover valve and valve-seat reconditioning, guide replacement, rocker-arm and pushrod inspection, sleeve service, piston/ring fitting, connecting-rod bushing work, crankshaft inspection, bearing-clearance checks, block inspection, reverse flushing, and thermostat testing. Electrical content is component specification and test data rather than tractor wiring diagrams.

The Perkins AG4.212/AG4.236 section goes much deeper into engine repair. It covers cylinder-head work, pistons and connecting rods, liners, crankshaft and main bearings, front and rear oil seals, timing gears, camshaft and tappets, the engine balancer assembly, flywheel, lubrication system, oil pump, carburetor, governor/distributor drive, water pump, thermostat, and ignition system. Displacement is listed at 212.3 and 235.9 cu. in., with 30–60 psi oil pressure at governed speed and 15.5 U.S. pints oil-pan capacity less the filter. A later cylinder-head gasket change raises head-nut torque to 95–100 ft-lb. Specialist tooling includes the MFN-236 valve-guide reamer kit, MFN-325 cylinder-liner puller plate, and MFN-747B/MFN-747C front crankshaft-seal tooling.

For the AD4.203 direct-injection diesel, the specifications identify a 203.5 cu. in., 18.5:1 engine using a CAV DPA distributor-type injection pump. Fuel-lift-pump pressure is 5–8 psi, engine oil pressure is 30–65 psi, and injector opening pressure is split between used and new injectors. The engine-identification pages document the change in serial-number format around May 31, 1966, helping match the correct data before repair work begins.

Diagrams, Views & Repair Details That Matter

Illustration coverage is built around service identification. Representative examples include “Disassembled View of Steering Pump — MF 150 — Diesel,” “Steering Gear Nomenclature,” “View of AG4.236 Carburetor Assembly — Sequence of Parts,” “Engine Balancer Assembly,” sectional views for the MFN-747B/MFN-747C front crankshaft-seal tools, and the “Side Sectional View of AD4.203 Engine — Early Model Shown.” These views help confirm part orientation, component order, and the exact assembly under discussion.

The manual also captures several repair traps that generic tractor references usually miss. On the MF 150 diesel steering pump, the diaphragm is indexed with its bronze face upward and its slots on the suction side; incorrect orientation can interfere with pump operation. Pedestal-shaft master splines must be timed correctly because incorrect timing can create unequal steering travel. During AG4.212/AG4.236 balancer service, the shafts must not be forced against the softer bushings; the manual warns that bushing damage can lead to severe engine damage.
