Massey-Ferguson Manual Features & Content Preview
- 4,420-page PDF for Massey Ferguson 6445, 6455, 6460, 6465, 6470, 6475, 6480, 6485, 6490, 6495, 6497, and 6499 tractors; AGCO/Massey Ferguson workshop service publication No. 3378405M5, dated September 2008.
- Model and configuration tables distinguish Perkins 1104/1106 and Sisu 44 CWA, Fortius, and Citius engine installations, together with GBA20/GBA10 Dynashift and GBA25/GBA15 Dyna-6 drivetrains.
- Factory splitting procedures cover Perkins and Sisu front-frame removal, engine/transmission separation, gearbox-to-center-housing work, intermediate-housing separation, and PTO-housing removal, including the dedicated two-stage 4WD procedure for Sisu-powered MF 6497–6499 tractors.
- Transmission repair reaches into PowerShuttle clutch assemblies, Dynashift and Dyna-6 Powershift modules, robotic range gearboxes, shafts, planet carriers, selector rails and forks, creeper units, shimming, sensor adjustment, and operational testing.
- Rear-axle, PTO, and front-axle chapters address GPA20/GPA40/GPA30 assemblies, trumpet housings and final drives, differentials and multidisc locks, service brakes and ParkLock, Carraro and DANA axles, 4WD clutches, PTO clutch/brake units, linkage, and auto-hitch repair.
- Hydraulic diagnosis is separated by Open Center, Load Sensing, and Twin Flow Load Sensing systems, with pressure testing, pump and cover-plate repair, auxiliary spool-valve service, steering work, brake bleeding, trailer-brake diagnosis, and suspended-front-axle accumulator checks.
- Wintest and WinEEM3 material supports programming, fault diagnosis, error-code interpretation, calibration, and wiring work for Perkins and Sisu electronic injection, DCC2, Autotronic 3/5, EHRC, Datatronic 2/3, SMS Joystick/FingerTIP, suspended axles, and automatic air conditioning.
Configuration Matching and Scope
Coverage is organized around the tractor’s installed assemblies. Perkins applications include 1104 and 1106 four- and six-cylinder builds, with mechanical-injection and EEM/electronic-injection configurations documented where applicable. Sisu applications include 44 CWA, Fortius 66ETA and 74ETA, and Citius 66CTA and 74CTA engines. The specification tables also separate Tier 2 and Tier 3 builds, PowerShuttle and AutoDrive arrangements, creeper options, GPA axle families, fixed and suspended front axles, and Autotronic 3 versus Autotronic 5 control systems. Use those model and component identifiers—not model year alone—to confirm fitment.
The SisuDiesel programming section provides serial-break information. Engine-software selection changes at N258068/N258069 for the 6485, N342061/N342062 for the 6490, N344031/N344032 for the 6495, N345039/N345040 for the 6497, and N307025/N307026 for the 6499. It also covers matching the injection-pump serial number to the ECU after either component is replaced.
The engine chapters are not a standalone internal engine-overhaul manual. Their repair scope is tractor integration and interface work: installation data, fuel/oil/coolant specifications, engine-to-transmission spacers and seals, vibration dampers, flywheels, adapter plates, sealed bearings, starter ring gears, and related removal and refitting procedures.
Workshop Procedures and Technical Data
Splitting coverage is one of the strongest parts of this publication. Separate sections document Perkins and Sisu front-frame work; Perkins-to-GBA20 and GTA2520 separation; Sisu-to-GBA10, GTA1030, and GTA1540 separation; GBA20, GBA25, and GBA10 connections to the center or rear-axle housings; and center-housing/PTO-housing work. On MF 6497–6499 4WD tractors, the front axle must be removed before the radiator/cooler frame can be separated from the Sisu engine because the lower frame fasteners face the drive-pinion carrier.
The drivetrain chapters go well beyond basic removal. They document clutch-pack and brake-piston service, Powershift and Dynashift module disassembly, robotic gearbox range selection, synchronizers, selector-fork positioning, shaft and bearing preload, planet-carrier work, lubrication circuits, speed sensors, solenoid valves, creeper and super-creeper units, internal shimming, and post-repair checks. Rear-axle sections add pinion depth, differential backlash and tooth-contact checks, axle-shaft preload, brake and handbrake service, ParkLock, lift-cylinder and position-sensor work, and multiple ND, HD, SHD, HDE, and composite final-drive arrangements.
Reference data includes model-specific ground-speed charts by transmission and tire size, track-width and attachment-point drawings, fluid-capacity tables, general and component-specific torque specifications, hydraulic pressure-test values, bearing preload and backlash data, shim calculations, inspection limits, electrical test values, and controller calibration constants. Factory tool callouts include 3378262M1 and 3378712M1 Sisu vibration-damper centering tools, 3378225M11 for handling the GBA20 input unit, and 3378804M1/3378805M1 for GBA15 shaft handling and solenoid/limit-switch testing.
Diagnostics, Schematics, and Repair Notes
Electrical documentation includes wiring diagrams and system-specific schematics for SisuDiesel electronic injection, DCC2 Dyna-6, Autotronic 5 Dynashift/Dyna-6, Autotronic 5 linkage, Carraro and DANA suspended front axles, and automatic air conditioning. These are backed by connector and pin-location views, hydraulic circuit diagrams, diagnostic test charts, controller parameter pages, and exploded gearbox, axle, PTO, and hitch illustrations. Cab and accessory sections add cab-suspension checks, A/C fault finding and refrigerant service, front-linkage hydraulics, and Zuidberg front PTO repair.
Several procedures contain assembly details that matter during a major repair. On four-cylinder Perkins EEM tractors, the front-frame shims are directional and the support stands must remain undisturbed while the gap is established; an incorrect stack can preload the engine-sump/front-frame joint. At engine/transmission interfaces, resistant assemblies must not be forced together, or the vibration-damper and input-shaft splines can be damaged. In the GPA20 differential section, the ring gear and drive pinion must carry the same serial number; mixing the pair can compromise tooth contact and backlash and damage the gearset.
Support the tractor with rated stands and lifting equipment, isolate electrical power, and relieve hydraulic, brake, suspended-axle accumulator, cooling-system, and refrigerant pressure before opening systems or splitting the chassis.
