Workshop Repair Coverage
The workshop volume is organized around major assemblies rather than routine maintenance alone. Its splitting chapters identify the hoses, harnesses, controls, air-conditioning couplings, and support points involved when separating the engine from the gearbox, the gearbox from the rear axle, or the front frame from the engine. Repair sections then move through both clutch designs, gearbox input units, selector mechanisms, output and layshaft assemblies, Speedshift and Dynashift units, creeper gearing, rear-axle trumpet housings, differentials and brakes, PTO drives, and 2WD/4WD front axles.
Transmission coverage is configuration-specific. The manual distinguishes the standard gearbox from the reinforced heavy-duty version and covers mechanical and electrohydraulic selector arrangements. The heavy-duty section records a French-production change beginning at serial F008020 for the MF 6170 and F008029 for the MF 6180, helping identify the correct internal layout before repair parts or procedures are selected.

The workshop manual identifies the engine fitted to each model, including Perkins 4.41, 1004-family four-cylinder, and 1006-series six-cylinder builds. Included engine-related work is limited to model-specific specifications, the viscostatic fan, engine flywheel, shock absorber, flywheel ring gear, and spring- or pressure-loaded clutch spacers.
A complete internal Perkins engine overhaul is not contained in this PDF. The manual directs full engine technical data, adjustments, and removal/refitting procedures to separate Massey Ferguson publications 1856562 M1 and 1646906 M1. Those engine publications are not part of this set, an important distinction for anyone buying specifically for full internal engine disassembly, adjustment, inspection, and rebuilding procedures.

The workshop portion of this PDF ends with the cab and air-conditioning material. Although its opening contents page lists separate Accessories and Service Tools headings, those are not supplied here as standalone workshop chapters; tool references remain embedded in the repair sections, while accessory information appears in the operator and repair-time volumes.
The Speedshift chapter flags two easy-to-miss assembly risks: incorrect planetary-gear indexing can damage the unit, while even minor damage to the ring-carrier sealing rings can cause leakage and loss of operating pressure. Tractor splitting, stored hydraulic pressure, PTO work, heavy-component lifting, electrical isolation, and refrigerant service all require the safety procedures and support equipment specified in the manual.
