Massey-Ferguson Manual Features & Content Preview

This 375-page PDF combines the 1989 Massey Ferguson 304 Series workshop publication with later supplements and service notes. Written for workshop foremen and expert mechanics, the factory text assumes repair experience and omits some routine disassembly and assembly details.

  • Engine coverage includes timing-gear installation, camshaft timing checks, CAV DPA injection-pump rotor-reference verification, and valve-clearance adjustment.
  • LUK/OMG dual dry clutch inspection and alignment accompany synchromesh gearbox disassembly and reassembly, including reverse shuttle, creeper, and underdrive configurations.
  • Tractor-splitting guidance and drivetrain repair sections cover bevel gear pair settings, differential housing bearing preload calculations, rear epicyclic hubs, and independent or ground-speed PTO operation.
  • Separate 2WD and 4WD front axle sections address hub service, NO-SPIN differential checks, and front-to-rear wheel lead calculations. Hydrostatic steering coverage includes pressure checks, leak isolation, and bleeding.
  • Oil-immersed disc brake inspection, hydraulic brake circuit management, pedal adjustment, and bleeding are covered alongside front-brake and export-market hydraulic trailer-brake arrangements.
  • Mechanical hydraulic lift testing and adjustment are supplemented by electronic lift diagnosis, with function checks, multimeter tests, connector views, and fault-finding tables.

Models and Perkins engines

The main publication distinguishes narrow orchard S, wide orchard F, and vineyard V configurations:

Models Engine configuration
354 V AD3.152, 3-cylinder
354 S/F AD3.152S, 3-cylinder
364 S/F/V T3.152.4, turbocharged 3-cylinder
374 S/F/V Derated A4.236, 4-cylinder
384 S/F A4.236, 4-cylinder
394 S/F A4.248, 4-cylinder

The engine section provides assembly and inspection data for cylinder liners, piston rings, connecting rods, crankshaft end float, and four-cylinder balancing weights. Compression specifications, cooling-system limits, lubrication data, and injector calibration tables support engine repair. Component torque specifications accompany the assembly data.

The alternative injection-timing method identifies MS 67B and adapter PD 67B-1. Its pump-checking notes warn that excessive test pressure can damage the injection pump.

Transmission, steering, and hydraulic options

The standard constant-mesh gearbox has 12 forward and four reverse speeds; shuttle configurations with creeper or underdrive provide 24 forward and 12 reverse speeds. Section views distinguish these gear paths. PTO coverage separates 540/750 and 540/1,000 arrangements. Mechanical differential-lock adjustment is accompanied by hydraulic-lock inserts and MF 394 F parts drawings.

Steering repair covers the Danfoss OSPC Orbitrol and Turolla TFP 200 pump, with separate steering-cylinder arrangements for orchard and vineyard tractors. The Orbitrol Valve in Cross Section supports component identification during service.

Lift-pump overhaul covers Turolla and Bosch units. The optional independent hydraulic circuit uses Cessna tandem pumps on three-cylinder engines and Bosch or Sundstrand pumps on four-cylinder engines. Its compatibility notes specify a heavy-duty steel engine timing gear.

Günter Till auxiliary-valve coverage distinguishes single- and double-acting operation, float, kick-out, and hydraulic-motor applications. The Independent Hydraulic Circuit Diagram shows the separate auxiliary supply.

The 30-page special-tools section includes dimensioned drawings for pullers, fixtures, and gauges. Examples include R500 and R500/B clutch-setting equipment, R501 and R501/A pinion-setting tools, and the CR342 lift-valve test fixture. Lift-pump repair notes identify dry running and inadequate initial lubrication as causes of pump seizure.

Electrical diagnosis and electronic lift control

The 1993 electronic-lift supplement applies to SPECIAL Range MF 304 S-F-A cab tractors. It covers force and position sensors, control-panel switches and potentiometers, raising/lowering solenoids, and external lift buttons. Position-sensor adjustment and a connection tester support fault isolation.

The ECU can be tested but is not internally serviceable; most electronic lift-valve components are also not individually repairable or replaceable.

Electrical references include the Traditional Tractor Electric System Diagram, Main Power Wiring Diagram, and Electronic Control Lift Electrical Diagram with connector pinning. Fuse assignments, wire colors, and trailer-socket connections support circuit tracing.
