This first-edition Massey-Ferguson workshop service manual (04/2003; Edition 01: 04/03) covers the MF 415, 425, 435, 440, 445, 460, 465, and 475 tractors, with separate sections for 2WD and 4WD axles and platform and cab configurations.

• Tractor splitting: Separation and reassembly at the front axle, engine, gearbox, and rear housing, plus ROPS, canopy, fender, and hood removal.

Perkins Engine Testing and Inspection Data

The engine section distinguishes naturally aspirated and turbocharged applications. It provides cylinder-head, block, crankshaft, piston, ring, lubrication, cooling, and turbocharger inspection data alongside the testing and adjustment procedures.

This section does not contain a complete internal engine disassembly and rebuilding procedure.

Clutches, Gearboxes, and Tractor Splitting

Clutch documentation includes flywheel and pressure plate machining dimensions, release lever adjustments, and troubleshooting tables for slipping, drag, vibration, and noise. Sealed HD single-stage clutch assemblies are covered for removal and replacement, rather than internal disassembly.

Separate modules cover the 8x2 sliding gear, Eaton 12x4 constant mesh, and Eaton 12x4 partial synchromesh transmissions. Power-flow drawings and gear selection diagrams accompany the shaft, bearing, and coupling procedures; cab side-shift linkages are treated separately from platform-mounted selectors.

The 8x2 synchromesh module is reserved in this edition and is not included. The MF 445 MS entry supplies clutch and flywheel specifications for the 6x6 Manual Shuttle variant, without a 6x6 gearbox overhaul chapter.

Model-specific fastener diagrams distinguish the tractor connections during reassembly. The splitting section warns that misalignment between the gearbox pilot shaft and clutch discs can permanently damage these components.

Always adhere to standard shop safety practices and verify lifting and support arrangements before tractor splitting or heavy-assembly removal.

Front Axles, Rear Axles, and Brakes

Front axle chapters cover final drives, half-shaft universal joints, steering cylinders, drive boxes, and self-locking differential inspection. Exploded views identify components and their assembly positions.

Rear axle procedures include brake actuators and disc packs, differential bearing preload, ring-and-pinion backlash, and tooth contact pattern checks. The MF 415 has its own half-shaft section because it does not use rear final reduction units. Four general torque tables cover metric and inch fasteners, with component-specific tightening data throughout the manual.

Ferguson Lift Hydraulics, Danfoss Steering, and IPTO

Lift system service includes pump valve seat refinishing with tool kit FT5004, draft and position control linkage adjustment, and external lift cylinder repair.

Hydraulic flow diagrams and Danfoss cutaway drawings distinguish OSPC ON steering on the MF 415–460 from OSPC LS load-sensing arrangements on the MF 465 and 475. These differences help match pressure tests and hydraulic connections to the installed steering system.

IPTO documentation covers control valves, pressure checks, drive pump service, and clutch pack assembly clearances. A restricted disc-lubrication orifice is identified as a cause of clutch overheating and premature wear.

Wiring Diagrams and Electrical Testing

Circuit drawings cover starting, lighting, instruments and sensors, hazard and turn signals, trailer connections, and cab air conditioning. Prestolite A 127B alternator and M93R starter sections include component inspection, reassembly, and bench testing.

A Preview of Valve Clearances and IPTO Disc Measurements

The following examples are a small selection of the manual’s adjustment and inspection data.

Cold inlet and exhaust valve clearance is 0.30 mm for the A 3.152, A 4.236, and P4000 engines. The 1000 Series uses 0.20 mm inlet and 0.45 mm exhaust clearance.

For IPTO clutch inspection, friction disc thickness is specified at 2.41–2.54 mm and plain steel disc thickness at 1.35–1.45 mm.
