This is a 334-page PDF published by BMW Motorrad After Sales. BMW Order No. 01 71 0 021 836 appears on the included maintenance-schedule and pre-delivery-check sheets, while the separate service-data sheet carries Order No. 01 71 0 021 845; both are marked UX-VS-2, 02/00.
The opening material covers pre-delivery setup, factory inspection routines, annual service items, MoDiTeC fault-memory checks, valve-clearance service, engine-oil and Dakar fork-oil work, coolant and brake-fluid service, chain and spoke checks, and final road-safety and function checks. The technical chapters then move well beyond scheduled maintenance into full powertrain, chassis, brake, and electrical repair.
Model and System Differences
Procedures restricted to the Dakar are clearly tagged [Dakar]. The suspension data separates standard GS, lowered GS, and Dakar fork configurations, while other model-specific material distinguishes Dakar suspension specifications, front-wheel size, hand protectors, and voltage-regulator location. Optional ABS work is identified separately. The fuel-tank chapter covers the rollover valve, fuel pump and strainer, plus the USA-version fuel-evaporation control valve and activated-charcoal-filter equipment.
The powertrain coverage is for the liquid-cooled DOHC single-cylinder engine with dry-sump lubrication, twin trochoid oil pumps, BMS mapped ignition, manifold fuel injection, a five-speed gearbox, and a three-way catalytic converter. The engine chapter contains the inspection limits and assembly data needed for internal repair rather than stopping at routine tune-up work.
Tools, Illustrations, and Electrical Scope
Factory-tool callouts are given at the relevant procedures. Examples include engine lifter BMW 00 1 540 with adapter 11 0 591, piston-ring sleeve 11 6 510, gearbox circlip pliers 23 4 500, steering-head pin-wrench adapter 31 6 521, brake resetting tool 34 1 500, and wheel-balancing unit 36 3 600.
The electrical chapter includes left- and right-side wiring-harness routing views, Dakar-specific harness views, equipment-box component and relay locations, connector identification, fuses, switches, sensors, instruments, and lights. It does not provide a standalone set of complete circuit wiring diagrams or a fault-code interpretation chart, so those should not be assumed to be part of this PDF.
The manual specifically warns that a rebuilt engine must not be started until the oil circuit has been bled, and that installing a fork spring in the wrong orientation can damage the fixed-tube sliding surface. For ABS-equipped motorcycles, BMW specifies the MoDiTeC Control Units/Toolbox ABS routine as a supplement to manual bleeding to prevent air from remaining in the control circuits.
Fuel lines are pressurized, and brake, ABS, steering, and suspension work directly affects road safety. Follow the BMW cautions and use qualified service support for any repair beyond your training or equipment.
