Operating, Maintenance, and Minor Repair Coverage
BMW organized this publication around the work an owner or mechanic could reasonably perform with the motorcycle’s supplied tool kit. It begins with technical and licensing data, frame and engine number locations, fuel and lubricant requirements, controls, starting, gear changing, running-in, and use of the kickstand. Model differences are identified throughout instead of treating all four motorcycles as mechanically identical.
The engine and drivetrain chapters explain how the major assemblies are built and operate. Coverage includes the one-piece light-alloy crankcase, sectional forged-steel crankshaft, roller-bearing connecting rods, pistons and cylinders, overhead-valve gear, geared oil pump and filtered forced-feed lubrication, BING slide carburetors, single-plate dry clutch, and four-speed gearbox with constant-mesh gears, selector forks, sliding dogs, and shift interlock. The enclosed driveshaft, universal joint, spiral-bevel final drive, and rear suspension are also shown in section.
The service chapters provide the practical adjustment and repair information most likely to be needed during routine ownership. They cover battery care, air-filter and fuel-shutoff service, carburetor removal and cleaning, warm-idle adjustment, throttle-cable synchronization, clutch and brake free play, spark-plug inspection, contact-breaker adjustment, ignition timing, cold valve-clearance checks, and cylinder-head fastener checks. Separate sections address steering adjustment, wheel-bearing and swinging-arm-bearing play, spoke inspection, wheel balancing on the sport models, front and rear wheel removal, tire changing, lamp replacement, stoplight-switch adjustment, headlight aiming, and long-term storage.
Model Differences and Sidecar Setup
The manual distinguishes the touring-sport R50 and R60 from the R50S and R69S sport models by their intake, cylinder-head, exhaust, vibration-damper, and steering-damper arrangements. Solo R50S and R69S motorcycles use a hydraulic steering damper, while the touring models and sidecar-equipped machines use the mechanical friction type. These differences matter when selecting parts and following the correct repair section.
Sidecar coverage goes well beyond attachment points. BMW identifies the transmission and rear-drive gearing changes required for sidecar operation, along with steering-damper conversion, stronger rear springs, front-swingarm repositioning, mounting geometry, electrical connections, and sidecar brake adjustment. The R69S section also addresses factory conversion for sidecar use. A solo machine therefore cannot be treated as sidecar-ready without the specified chassis and drivetrain changes.
Drawings, Specifications, and Scope
The illustrations support the text with an engine cutaway, carburetor and clutch sections, four-speed transmission power-flow diagrams, a torque-damper diagram, rear-drive and suspension sections, a front-fork and hydraulic steering-damper view, and the complete electrical wiring diagram. Technical-data tables and maintenance schedules provide model-specific dimensions, ratios, ignition and valve settings, tire-pressure charts for solo, passenger, and sidecar use, lubricant information, capacities, and component-specific tightening data.
Several cautions reveal details that are easy to miss during repair work. The upper fuel-shutoff union uses opposing right- and left-hand threads, so forcing it as a conventional fitting can damage the union or tank connection. The wheel-service pages also call out correct brake-shoe-plate engagement with the swinging-arm guide and the removal of protruding spoke ends, helping prevent brake misalignment or inner-tube damage.
Before inspecting the mechanical or electrical systems, secure the motorcycle on a stable stand and allow the engine to cool fully. The publication is best suited to operation, scheduled maintenance, inspection, adjustment, and minor repair. It does not provide full engine or transmission teardown, machining, or workshop-overhaul procedures; those jobs require the separate BMW workshop literature.
