The dedicated 1991 automatic-transaxle volume is narrower than the 1990 repair section: it covers disassembly, inspection, and assembly of A540E and A540H units. On-vehicle inspection, adjustment, troubleshooting, removal, and installation are assigned to the applicable 1991 Camry Repair Manual, RM199U. Configuration tables identify the S51, E52, and E56F5 five-speed transaxles, but the M/T PDF is incomplete: its S51 and E52 material is present and the E56F5 section begins, while the closing E56F5 pages are missing.

Electrical, Body, and Model-Year Detail

The 1990 wiring manual traces circuits from the power source through connectors and junction blocks to the ground point, with system outlines and service hints. The collision-repair volume applies to SV20/SV21 and CV20 bodies for general destinations. It covers cut-and-join locations, panel replacement, weld-point symbols, radiator support and side-member work, roof, door, quarter-panel, wheel-housing, and floor-member repair, body sealing, anti-rust treatment, and three-dimensional body measurements. Painting is outside its scope.

Several factory cautions matter during repair. Tilting or forcing a 3S-FE or 2VZ-FE camshaft can damage the head’s thrust surface and lead to seizure or breakage. A540 valve-body solenoids are not to be pried out, and the oil pump must not be forced into the case; those shortcuts can deform the valve-body plate or leave an oil-seal ring stuck against the direct-clutch drum. Incorrect full-time 4WD towing, brake-test, dynamometer, or on-vehicle wheel-balancing setup can damage the center differential or transaxle gears.

The 2,101-page total consists of 145 pages of general information, maintenance, SST/SSM, torque, and service data; 451 pages of engine, EFI, and related systems; 635 pages of automatic-transaxle, clutch, and propeller-shaft material; 297 pages of chassis repair; 345 pages of electrical and HVAC coverage; 191 pages of body and collision repair; and 37 pages of 1990/1991 New Car Features. Brake, R-12 refrigerant, and full-time 4WD procedures require proper support, recovery, and test equipment and should be performed with the factory cautions followed.
