Yamaha Outboard Service Manual Collection, 1998 (P/N 696-28197-Z4-11)

The model index links individual outboard designations to the appropriate service publication. For jetdrive models, the Jetdrive Operation and Service Manual supplements the corresponding engine service manual.

The jetdrive publication also calls for the relevant outboard owner’s manual for general operating information. Those owner’s manuals are not included.

Finding text and reading circuits: The 25J/30D manual and model index support PDF text search. The other service manuals and jetdrive handbook do not provide searchable body text; the P60W–C90W file has searchable cover text only. Embedded bookmarks are present in all technical PDFs, although the first bookmark in the P60W–C90W manual has no working destination. Small labels in dense wiring diagrams require zooming.

The ZIP contains 21 printable PDFs totaling 3,669 pages: 3,668 pages across the technical publications plus the one-page model index. Covers, preliminary material, and included notes pages are already counted in these totals.

Power Units, Gearcases, and Electrical Fault Finding

These selected highlights show the repair coverage rather than reproduce the complete contents. Other included topics include anode inspection and corrosion checks.

• Fuel and scheduled service: Carburetor and fuel-pump service, compression checks, ignition timing, throttle-link adjustment, and model-specific maintenance procedures.

• Power-unit repair: Engine removal, internal inspection and reassembly, crankshaft and piston work, reed-valve inspection, and recoil-starter repair.

• Lower-unit overhaul: Water-pump service, gear-train disassembly, bearing and seal work, shim selection, backlash measurement, leakage testing, and installation.

• Brackets and trim: Upper-casing, mount-damper, steering, and bracket work, with separate procedures for mechanical tilt, hydro tilt, and power trim and tilt.

E48T/C55T Model and System Differences

The E48T/C55T manual identifies E48C, E55C, and 55BM as manual-start models. The 55BE, 55BEM, and 55BET use electric starting; 55BEM retains tiller control, while 55BE/C55ER and 55BET/C55TR use remote control.

Tilt equipment also differs. E48C uses mechanical tilt; E55C, 55BM, 55BE, and 55BEM are listed with hydro tilt; 55BET/C55TR has power trim and tilt. These are premix engines with reed-valve induction and mechanical ignition advance.

Match the approved model code, S/L designation, and starting serial block shown above before choosing procedures. These distinctions separate the applicable starting, control, and trim-system instructions.

E48T/C55T Fuel, Cooling, and Engine Repair

Scheduled checks: Predelivery and periodic-service sections address fuel lines, gear oil, cooling-water passages, compression, idle speed, ignition timing, neutral-opening control, propeller condition, reverse lock, and trim-system checks where fitted.

Fuel components: Step-by-step procedures cover the tank, primer, filter, pump, and carburetors. Carburetor inspection extends to the float and needle valve, main and pilot circuits, air jets, pilot screw, and choke components, including the solenoid arrangements used on applicable remote-control versions.

Internal engine work: Power-unit removal leads into service of the intake and magneto components, cylinder head, exhaust cover, crankcase, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, bearings, and reed valves. Cooling coverage includes the water-pressure control valve, with thermostat inspection for the specified 55B models. Manual-start versions have a separate recoil-starter repair section.

E48T/C55T Gearcase and Trim Work

The lower-unit chapter follows the drive shaft and pinion, forward and reverse gears, clutch dog, shift cam, propeller shaft, and bearing housing through inspection and assembly. Separate shim-selection methods account for regional tooling, followed by forward and reverse backlash checks, shift checks, and leakage testing.

Bracket work covers the upper casing, bottom cowling, mount dampers, exhaust guide, and water tube. Steering and swivel hardware, reverse lock, clamp brackets, and the trim sender receive their own inspection or assembly instructions.

For 55BET/C55TR, hydraulic coverage extends to the valves, pistons, cylinders, reservoir, motor service, filling, bleeding, and pressure testing. The factory-adjusted gear-pump unit is replaced complete rather than internally disassembled; the hydro-tilt units also carry restrictions against disassembly.

E48T/C55T Electrical Diagrams and Factory Tools

Separate engine wiring diagrams distinguish E48C/E55C, 55BM, 55BE, 55BEM, and 55BET. Remote-control schematics cover the 703-7P box for 55BE/C55ER and 703-10P box for 55BET/C55TR. A starter-motor exploded view, power-trim construction diagram, and shim-selection charts support the related repair sections.

Tests address spark, CDI operation, ignition and charge coils, stop and neutral switches, rectifier, choke solenoid, starter circuits, trim sender, and harness continuity. Troubleshooting flowcharts follow no-start, stalling, rough-idle, power-loss, misfire, shifting, and no-charge complaints, helping connect symptoms to the relevant component tests.

Tool references include compression gauge YU-33223/90890-06751, flywheel holder YB-6139/90890-06522, and puller YB-6117/90890-06521. Backlash work lists gauge YB-06265/90890-06706; CDI testing includes tester YU-91022-B. The manual distinguishes tests requiring an analog pocket tester from those using a digital meter.

Jetdrive Procedures and Workshop Cautions

The jetdrive handbook separates the smaller pump assemblies from the larger three-cylinder, V4, and V6 arrangements. Its assembly drawings accompany bearing and seal work, impeller shimming, reverse-gate adjustment, and liner replacement.

In the E48T/C55T power-unit section, levering with a steel or hard bar can damage the bottom cowling. The jetdrive instructions warn that incorrect shim placement on a new impeller can cause scoring and damage to the impeller or liner.

Fuel-system, ignition, starter, lower-unit, and power-trim repair can involve gasoline, ignition voltage, battery current, rotating components, suspended engine weight, and hydraulic pressure. Follow Yamaha’s safety procedures and use trained marine service support for work beyond your experience.

A Sample of Carburetor and Cylinder-Head Data

For the models in the E48T/C55T manual, carburetor assembly specifies a float height of 19 ± 1 mm, measured with the carburetor inverted. The accompanying illustrations identify the float and measurement points.

Cylinder-head inspection gives a warpage limit of 0.1 mm, checked with a straightedge and feeler gauge along the illustrated measurement paths.
