Use the Owner's Guide for vehicle operation, towing and routine owner checks, and the service articles for component diagnosis, repair and reassembly specifications. The service material consists of individual articles exported to PDF in February 2011, rather than one bound OEM workshop publication.
Coverage boundaries: Repair coverage centers on the 2009 gasoline F-150. The 2010 publication is a DTC index, not a complete second model-year repair manual. The ZF six-speed manual-transmission article applies to F-250 through F-550 Super Duty, not the F-150.

Engine, Transmission and Vehicle-System Procedures
The following is a selection of covered work, rather than a complete contents list. Accessory-drive diagnosis and windshield-wiper/washer testing are additional examples.
- Gasoline engine repair: Step-by-step procedures for engine removal, timing components, cylinder heads, valve train, lubrication components and internal disassembly.
- Automatic transmissions: Removal, overhaul and installation procedures, clutch and hydraulic-system testing, mechatronic service, cooler cleaning and adaptive road testing.
- Driveline and four-wheel drive: Transfer-case overhaul, TCCM and Integrated Wheel End diagnosis, driveshaft service, and differential setup.
- Brakes, suspension and steering: Brake diagnosis and bleeding, ABS/HCU service, suspension and hub replacement, alignment checks, and power-steering flushing and purging.
- Restraint systems: SRS fault isolation, component replacement, Occupant Classification Sensor system reset, and zero-seat-weight testing.

The repair material is suited to professional technicians and advanced owners who can work with IDS or equivalent scan equipment, precision measuring tools, and proper lifting and support equipment; it assumes working knowledge rather than teaching basic shop practice.
Engine Repair and Cooling
The engine articles address the 4.6L 2-valve, 4.6L 3-valve and 5.4L 3-valve gasoline engines. Coverage includes in-vehicle timing work, cylinder-head and valve-train service, oil pump and oil pan work, lower-end disassembly and inspection, and engine removal and installation.
The 3-valve sections add VCT housings, cam phasers and camshaft timing. They warn that incorrect camshaft or timing-component positioning can damage valves and pistons. Referenced equipment includes Crankshaft Holding Tool 303-448 and Cam Phaser Locking Tool 303-1046.
Cooling-system material covers coolant-loss and overheating diagnosis, draining, filling and bleeding, radiator service, and cooling-fan components. Post-repair engine guidance includes Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction using a scan tool.
Automatic Transmission Diagnosis and Overhaul
The 4R70E/4R75E and 6R80 articles cover RWD and 4WD layouts. Procedures extend from removal and installation to internal clutch, pump, geartrain and valve-body work, with mechatronic service in the 6R80 material.
Diagnostic references include air and line-pressure testing, road tests, cooler backflushing and cleaning, and the 6R80 adaptive drive cycle. The 6R80 Transmission Major Components Cutaway View and Hydraulic Circuit Identification and Function Chart connect component layout with hydraulic operation. Transmission Fluid Fill Tube 307-570 is among the specified service tools.
Transfer Cases, Driveshafts and Axles
Mechanical- and electronic-shift 4WD coverage includes TCCM and Integrated Wheel End fault isolation, transfer-case disassembly and assembly, driveshaft and U-joint service, and front drive-axle repair.
Rear-axle articles cover Ford 8.8-inch and 9.75-inch assemblies, including conventional, Traction-Lok and electronic locking differential configurations as applicable. Backlash, bearing preload, tooth-contact patterns and shim selection are covered, with an Exploded View of Electronic Locking Differential Field Coil and tools such as Drive Pinion Depth Gauge/Aligner 205-226.
The axle procedures warn that backing off the pinion nut to reduce bearing preload can cause component damage; the specified correction involves renewing the collapsible spacer and pinion nut.
Chassis and Restraint Service
Brake coverage includes diagnosis, bleeding, disc-brake component replacement, parking-brake work, and ABS/HCU and AdvanceTrac components. Separate RWD and 4WD front-suspension articles accompany rear-suspension, wheel-bearing, hub and halfshaft procedures.
Steering material adds assist diagnosis, flushing and purging. Tire information includes TPMS sensor activation and training.
The SRS article provides fault-isolation charts and Restraints Control Module System Diagrams, along with Occupant Classification Sensor system reset and zero-seat-weight testing. Follow the applicable article's SRS depowering, brake-system, fuel/refrigerant handling, and vehicle-support precautions before beginning repair work.
Electrical Fault Isolation and Module Setup
Gasoline-engine pinpoint tests address no-start conditions, reference-voltage and sensor faults, fuel delivery, misfire, ignition, electronic throttle control, VCT, EVAP, emissions and network/readiness concerns. DTC charts, PID checks, connector references and component tests support fault isolation before component removal or replacement.
The wiring article contains 92 named system diagrams, while the component-location article provides 42 location graphics. Examples include the 4WD Circuit, Electronic and 4.6L Engine Performance Circuit, with separate coverage for starting, charging, lighting and trailer circuits.

A Preview of 6R80 Clutch End-Play Specifications
The 6R80 end-play table specifies forward clutch (A) end play of 0.71–1.10 mm and direct clutch (B) end play of 0.50–1.30 mm. These are clutch-specific inspection specifications used alongside the internal assembly procedures and clutch-plate selection data.
