Electrical and Restraint System Details
The 2000 Supplemental Inflatable Restraint material goes well beyond a basic air bag overview. It identifies the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), driver and passenger air bag modules, seat-mounted side impact modules, Side Impact Sensors (SIS), SIR coil assembly, pretensioners, and the AIR BAG warning circuit. The SDM includes a 23-volt loop reserve capable of retaining deployment energy for up to 10 minutes after ignition voltage is lost.
Service coverage includes SIR system disabling and activation, coil centering, SDM and steering-wheel service, side-impact sensor removal and installation, system checks, and both on-vehicle and off-vehicle air bag deployment procedures. Diagnostic material is backed by the Bonneville/LeSabre DTC index for deployment-loop resistance, open-circuit, short-to-ground, side-impact, and SDM-related faults.
The restraint section also identifies dedicated service equipment including J-35616-A Connector Test Adapter Kit, J-39200 digital multimeter, J-38826 deployment harness, J-39401-B deployment tool, J-38715-A SIR load tool, and J-1859-A/J-42578 steering-wheel removal tools. Factory data includes the 80 in-lb (9 Nm) SDM fastener specification and 30 ft-lb (41 Nm) steering-wheel nut torque.
Starting and charging coverage separates the AD230 105-amp and AD237 125-amp generators and explains their PCM-monitored L, F, and S circuits. On-vehicle diagnosis uses the J41450-B CS Electronic Generator Tester, with specified generator test loads of 73 amps for the AD230 and 87 amps for the AD237 and a 0.5-volt maximum voltage-drop test point. Generator mounting-bolt torque is 37 ft-lbs (50 Nm). The starter section identifies the PG260 F2 unit for the 3.8L VIN K engine and PG260 M for VIN 1, with dedicated starting-system schematics.
The 2000 Bonneville electrical diagrams extend far beyond starting and charging. Named examples include Anti-Lock Brake Circuits, Computer Data Lines, 3.8L VIN 1 Engine Performance Circuits, Power Distribution Circuits, Charging Circuit, and Supplemental Restraint Circuit. Technical Data, Powertrain Repair, and Diagnostics
For 2000–2001 cars, the 3.8L engine material covers both naturally aspirated L36 and supercharged L67 configurations. Repair subjects include the supercharger and intake system, cylinder heads and valvetrain, timing components, oil pump and oil pan, crankshaft and bearings, seals, cooling-system components, and engine removal and installation. The L67 section specifically treats the supercharger as the upper intake manifold and provides its own service data rather than treating both 3.8L versions as identical.
The 4T65-E section includes fluid and filter service, oil cooler flushing and flow testing, case side cover work, control valve body service, oil pump, pressure-control solenoid, TCC PWM solenoid, 1-2 and 2-3 shift solenoids, transmission fluid pressure switch, vehicle-speed sensor, and line-pressure test access. Listed capacities are 7.4 qt (7.0 L) after pan removal, 10.0 qt (9.5 L) after overhaul, and 13.4 qt (12.7 L) dry.
Brake repair coverage includes the Bosch 5.3 ABS/TCS system with EBCM and Brake Pressure Modulator Valve operation, wheel-speed diagnostics, traction control, VSES functions where equipped, Tech 2 DTC retrieval, conventional bleeding, 30–35 psi pressure bleeding, and the scan-tool-operated automated ABS bleed used when secondary circuits contain air or the BPMV has been replaced.
The 2005 GXP files add a substantially different level of engine repair coverage for the 4.6L LD8 V8. Specifications include a 10.0:1 compression ratio, 140–170 psi compression-test range, 7.5-quart oil capacity with filter, minimum 5 psi oil pressure at idle, and 35 psi minimum at 2,000 rpm. The repair sections cover engine replacement, cylinder heads, pistons and connecting rods, crankshaft and bearings, oil pump, primary and secondary camshaft drive chains, camshaft timing, valve gear, seals, thread repair, and complete off-vehicle cleaning, inspection, disassembly, and assembly operations. Engine-control material adds PCM replacement, CKP System Variation Learn, sensor and ignition diagnosis, fuel-pressure testing, Tech 2 fuel-injector balance testing, EVAP and EGR service, and emissions readiness/set procedures.
Several details matter during major repair work. On the 4.6L engine, the M11 cylinder-head bolt thread pitch was revised; the documentation warns that mixing the 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm bolt-hole tooling or inserts can cause engine damage and specifies the corresponding J-42385 repair-tool families. During 4T65-E valve-body work, the check balls must remain in their assigned locations, and the text specifically warns that unsuitable assembly grease can alter transmission-fluid characteristics and cause shift problems or filter clogging. The GXP camshaft-cover procedure also calls out the exposed cover seal at the cylinder-head edge because careless installation can damage the seal.
This is not one uniform GM-issued factory manual covering every Bonneville system identically from 2000 through 2005. The package combines a broad Haynes V6 repair manual with model- and year-specific service-information sections. The strongest detailed repair coverage is for 2000–2001 Bonneville/LeSabre systems and the 2005 Bonneville GXP 4.6L, supplemented by selected 2002–2004 starting, fuse, drive-axle, cooling-fan, electrical-locator, relearn, owner-information, and diagnostic material.
