Working on a 1988–1992 full-size Chevrolet or GMC C/K pickup? This four-PDF set pairs a 329-page vehicle repair manual with three engine-building references. The pickup volume covers 2WD and 4WD gasoline trucks with the 4.3L V6, 5.0L and 5.7L small-block V8s, and 7.4L Mark IV big-block V8. It is written for experienced DIY owners and working mechanics: routine maintenance and many component repairs can be handled in a home shop, while automatic-transmission overhaul, 4L80-E diagnosis, unique C3HD suspension work, and refrigerant service are left to properly equipped professionals.
Before beginning repair work, support the truck only at the specified lifting points, relieve fuel-system pressure before opening any line or throttle-body component, and have the air-conditioning system professionally discharged before service.
- Engine service and overhaul: Covers in-vehicle valve-train, intake, exhaust, cylinder-head, timing, camshaft, oil-pump, seal, and mount repair, followed by full removal, inspection, measurement, assembly, pre-oiling, startup, and break-in procedures.
- TBI fuel and emissions systems: Includes fuel-pressure testing, pump and tank removal, throttle-body and injector service, ECM trouble-code diagnosis, PROM/CALPAK handling, and checks for oxygen-sensor, EST, ESC, EGR, AIR, EVAP, and PCV systems.
- Transmission and four-wheel-drive coverage: Identifies the MG5 five-speed and normal- and heavy-duty four-speed units, 3L80/3L80-HD, 4L60, and 4L80-E automatics, plus NP241 and Borg-Warner 1370 transfer cases. Internal overhaul is provided for the NP241; automatic-transmission coverage is limited to diagnosis, adjustments, seals, and removal/installation.
- Brakes, steering, suspension, and driveline: Details disc and drum brakes, RWAL, vacuum and Hydro-boost units, clutch hydraulics, driveshafts, U-joints, rear axles, four-wheel-drive CV joints, hubs, torsion bars, coil and leaf springs, steering gears, and alignment fundamentals.
- Electrical diagnosis and schematics: Provides open-, short-, and ground-circuit tests plus representative multi-sheet diagrams for Throttle Body Injection, Fuel Control/Idle Air Control, Starting/Charging Circuits, Turn Signal and Hazard Lights, Instrument Panel, and Power Windows.
- Reference specifications and illustrations: Supplies application-specific torque tables, fluid capacities, pressure tests, wear limits, bearing and piston clearances, electrical test values, exploded views, and component-location drawings.
More than routine truck repair
The 152-page How to Rebuild the Small-Block Chevrolet extract adds a systematic rebuild path for the first-generation small-block family, including the truck-relevant 305 and 350. It moves from diagnosis and disassembly through parts selection, machine-shop operations, cleaning, preassembly fitting, final assembly, and break-in. Subjects include crankshaft endplay, bearing oil clearance, camshaft fit and degreeing, ring end gap, connecting-rod side clearance, piston-to-head and piston-to-valve checks, rocker-arm geometry, oil-pump pickup positioning, and compression-ratio measurement. The supplied extract ends with Appendix A and a Work-A-Long Sheet; the Source Guide listed as Appendix B is not included.
A separate 25-page illustrated small-block refresher follows a basic four-bolt-block assembly after cleaning and honing. It is useful as a visual overview, but it is generic rather than C/K-specific and repeatedly relies on the applicable shop manual for final specifications.
Know the exact scope
The set contains 533 PDF pages total: the 329-page C/K pickup repair manual, the 152-page small-block rebuilding extract, a 27-page Mitchell engine article, and the 25-page illustrated small-block refresher.
The 27-page Mitchell article is headed for 1987 Chevrolet Corvette applications and covers 1987–1988 VIN F and VIN 8 5.0L/5.7L engines used in Camaro, Firebird, and Corvette TPI applications. It is a separate engine reference—not supplemental C/K throttle-body-injection coverage. Likewise, the pickup manual includes 7.4L Mark IV big-block procedures and a 1990 Chevrolet 454 SS identification photo, but no dedicated 454 SS-only repair chapter. Its wiring section is a representative set of commonly needed circuits, not a complete year-by-year diagram collection.
Special-tool callouts include GM J-23028 for controlled 2WD front coil-spring removal and J-29369/J-2619-series pullers and slide hammers for NP241 bearing work. Two details deserve particular attention: opening the spring-loaded TBI pressure regulator can cause injury and later fuel leakage, while nicking the NP241 oil-pump pickup-tube O-ring during assembly can starve the pump and lead to transfer-case failure.
