What the Manual Documents:
The General Information section includes VIN and model-number decoding for Legacy/OUTBACK body type, 2.0 L/2.5 L/3.0 L displacement, LHD or RHD steering position, transmission and fuel-system configuration, destination, and the 2003 model-year identifier. Periodic maintenance is separated into Europe and except-Europe schedules with severe-use tables. It covers fuel-filter replacement and camshaft-drive-belt service; the 3.0 L timing chains do not require periodic inspection or replacement.
Engine repair coverage reaches well beyond oil, filters, and tune-up work. H4SO and H4DOSTC mechanical chapters include compression, intake manifold vacuum, engine oil pressure, fuel pressure, valve clearance, engine removal and installation, timing-belt service, camshaft and cylinder-head work, and cylinder-block overhaul. The H6DO section handles the 3.0 L six-cylinder separately, including timing-chain, front/rear chain-cover, camshaft, cylinder-head, and cylinder-block procedures. Engine diagnostics include ECM I/O data, OBD-II and Subaru Select Monitor use, DTC charts, drive-cycle and inspection modes, clear-memory functions, compulsory valve-operation checks, and no-start fault finding.
The 4AT section documents road, stall, time-lag, line-pressure, and transfer-clutch pressure tests before moving into the control valve body, shift and duty solenoids, transfer clutch, center differential carrier, oil pump, front differential, high/reverse clutch, planetary gear and low clutch, 2-4 brake, and low/reverse brake. The 5MT section covers overhaul preparation, transfer and extension cases, center differential, single- and dual-range main shafts, input shaft, drive pinion, front differential, shifter forks, and counter gear. Chassis chapters add T-type and VA-type rear differentials, drive shafts, ABS/VDC diagnosis, brake hydraulics and hill-holder service, MacPherson-strut front and multi-link rear suspension, wheel bearings, and rack-and-pinion power-steering repair.
Factory-tool references include Subaru Select Monitor Kit 22771AA030 with cartridge 24082AA210, automatic-transmission oil-pressure gauge 498575400 with adapters 498897200 and 498897700, and power-steering pressure gauge 925711000. Tightening torques appear throughout in N·m, kgf-m, and ft-lb.
Specification Highlights:
Engine oil replacement quantity is approximately 4.0 L for 2.0 L non-turbo and 2.5 L engines, 4.5 L for the 2.0 L turbo, and 5.6 L for the 3.0 L. Outback coolant capacity is 6.8 L with the 2.5 L/5MT, 6.7 L with the 2.5 L/4AT, and 7.9 L with the 3.0 L. The 4AT holds 9.3-9.6 L of ATF, the AT differential 1.1-1.3 L, the AWD rear differential 0.8 L, and the power-steering system 0.7 L.
Generator output is 90 A for the 2.0 L/2.5 L and 100 A for the 3.0 L, with battery capacities differentiated by region and transmission. The standard spark-plug gap for a 2.0 L non-turbo engine with OBD is 1.0-1.1 mm. Front and rear wheel-bearing axial displacement is specified within 0.05 mm.
Full-throttle 4AT line pressure is 1,128-1,304 kPa in “2” range and 1,520-1,716 kPa in reverse, with separate MPT and VTD transfer-clutch pressure tables. HVAC data specifies HFC-134a refrigerant and ZXL200PG compressor oil; refrigerant charge is 0.65±0.05 kg for LHD systems and 0.45±0.05 kg for RHD systems.
Several cautions show the repair depth. The manual warns against prying light-alloy manual-transmission case sections apart with a screwdriver because the mating surfaces can be damaged. During power-steering rack assembly, burrs or nicks at the guide/rack area and incorrect seal handling can damage the rack-bushing O-ring or oil seal. The Super Multiple Junction connecting bolt is specified at 4.4 N·m; excessive tightening can deform the connectors.
Safety-sensitive work is addressed for SRS, brake, refrigerant, electrical, and lifted-vehicle procedures. Airbag sections include service and deployment-tool precautions, while HVAC covers HFC-134a recovery, charging, leak checking, and compressor-oil handling. Immobilizer DTC diagnosis is included, but ignition-key teaching is referred to separate Subaru publication S0820GZ, a clear scope boundary for key-programming repair work.
