Model-Year and System Differences
This repair manual separates configurations where the hardware or procedure changed instead of treating every Dyna alike. It distinguishes 1991 from 1992-on oil-tank and oil-line routing, domestic from international air-filter backplates, 1992-on California evaporative-emission hardware, and the electronic speedometer system used for 1995. The front-suspension chapter also gives the Wide Glide its own fork information.
Common 1991–1995 procedures are in the main chapters. Changes unique to 1996–1998 are collected in the supplement, covering later maintenance information, ignition service, battery and charging-system work, starter and switch service, the front master cylinder, and the revised 1998 clutch plate arrangement and overhaul. Unchanged later-model procedures refer back to the corresponding main chapter.
Engine, Primary Drive, and Transmission Repair
The engine section reaches well beyond routine tune-up work. It covers top-end and lower-end repair, including rocker-arm inspection, cylinder-head and valve-component service, valve guides and seats, cylinder measurement, piston and ring inspection, piston-pin bushings, hydraulic lifters, oil-pump service, cam and breather gear inspection, crankshaft end play, main bearings, crankcase assembly, and engine break-in after repair. Service limits and component-specific tightening tables are placed with the related work.
Drivetrain coverage runs from clutch-plate inspection through clutch-shell and hub service, primary-chain and guide inspection, compensating-sprocket checks, inner-primary work, and starter-jackshaft repair. The transmission chapter handles the external linkage and pawl adjustment, gear-engagement checks, top cover, shift cam, shift forks, side door, mainshaft and countershaft, main drive gear, case, and release mechanism.
One important 1994-on distinction is the use of separate domestic and HDI transmission gear sets. The manual identifies the gear families and warns against mixing them because transmission damage can result. Listed factory or equivalent tools include the HD-41214 primary-drive locking tool, HD-39618 transmission-pawl adjuster, HD-35316A main-drive-gear remover/installer, HD-36583 fork-seal driver, and HD-39301 steering-head bearing-race installer.
Diagnostics, Drawings, and Brake Service
Electrical diagnosis is built around usable test circuits, not symptom lists alone. Coverage includes starter-solenoid voltage-drop diagrams, starter current-draw and free-running tests, charging-system output and stator checks, ignition-coil and module tests, sensor-plate and VOES diagnostics, switch continuity diagrams, and turn-signal-module testing. The wiring section progresses from early FXD diagrams through separate FXDL and FXDWG schematics, a 1995 FXD/FXDS-CONV diagram, and all-FXD sheets for 1996, 1997, and 1998.
Useful visual references include the 1991 and 1992-on oil-line routing views, rocker-arm and cylinder-head exploded assemblies, wet-clutch and primary-chaincase layouts, transmission gear and shift-cam identification drawings, CV-carburetor troubleshooting and fuel-level diagrams, and front-fork section views.
Brake coverage includes pads, calipers, pistons, master cylinders, hoses, lines, discs, inspection, reassembly, and system bleeding. The manual specifies DOT 5 silicone brake fluid and distinguishes it from incompatible glycol-based fluids. Caliper bushings and pad hardware are position-sensitive; incorrect assembly can damage parts or interfere with brake operation. Carburetor service has another model-specific trap: forcing the later float pin out from the wrong side can crack the mounting pedestal and require carburetor-body replacement.
