Technical Overview and Structure
This workshop manual covers on-vehicle service and diagnosis for Mazda6 models fitted with the L8, LF, and L3 engines. Engine-side coverage includes valve-clearance inspection and adjustment, compression testing, timing-chain service, cylinder-head-gasket replacement, engine removal/installation, variable valve timing actuator and oil control valve work, oil-pressure inspection, oil pump service, cooling-system testing, fuel-pressure checks, injectors, EVAP/EGR components, and PCM-related inspection and configuration.
Driveline and chassis sections identify the G35M-R manual transaxle and FN4A-EL automatic transaxle, then continue through clutch components, front and rear hubs, drive shafts, engine-speed-sensing power steering, conventional brakes, ABS/TCS, DSC, and suspension alignment. Factory Repair and Diagnostic Procedures
Repair depth goes well beyond routine maintenance. The manual covers procedures that are commonly shop work: timing-chain and cylinder-head-gasket service, engine removal, clutch service, transaxle removal, FN4A-EL line-pressure and stall testing, control-valve-body work, front/rear hub and drive-shaft service, steering pressure testing, brake hydraulic service, ABS/DSC HU/CM configuration, combine-sensor initialization, wheel alignment, refrigerant recovery/charging, and climate-control on-board diagnosis. Several manual-specific cautions are especially useful before a repair is started. The variable valve timing actuator is a precision unit with an integrated sprocket and is not intended to be disassembled; attempting to split the assembly risks damaging it. On the FN4A-EL, Mazda warns that using an impact wrench on the manual-shaft nut can damage the transaxle. The A/C section warns that moisture or foreign material entering open refrigerant fittings can reduce cooling performance and cause abnormal system noise, while refrigerant overcharging can damage refrigeration-cycle parts.
Specification Highlights
The technical data is configuration-specific rather than one-size-fits-all. Base idle is 650-750 rpm for L8 and LF/ATX applications, but 600-700 rpm for LF/MTX and L3. Engine oil capacity also varies: L8/LF engines specify 4.3 L with filter replacement and 4.6 L total for a dry engine, while the L3 specifies 3.5 L with filter and 4.2 L dry. Cooling-system capacity is 7.5 L, with radiator-cap opening pressure specified at 113-142 kPa (16.4-20.6 psi).
For the G35M-R, the manual specifies 2.87 L of transaxle oil, with SAE 75W-90 listed for all-season use. The FN4A-EL uses ATF M-V and includes line-pressure specifications for idle and stall conditions across D/S/L and reverse. Other useful reference data includes 10.80-11.29 MPa power-steering pump/gear-housing pressure, R-134a refrigerant charge of 470 g for L.H.D. or 430 g for R.H.D. vehicles, brake-fluid specifications by market, wheel-alignment values, and a five-stage cylinder-head-bolt tightening specification.
Service work in these sections can involve hot pressurized coolant, fuel and brake hydraulics, R-134a refrigerant, SRS components, and high-voltage discharge headlights. Follow the factory warnings and cautions in the relevant section; improper repair or test procedures can damage components or leave the vehicle unsafe.
Scope Boundaries
Mazda lists separate related publications for the L8/LF/L3 engine, the G35M-R manual transaxle, the FN4A-EL automatic transaxle and supplement, full Mazda6 wiring diagrams, and bodyshop repair. This publication is therefore strongest for on-vehicle service, diagnosis, inspection, adjustment, removal/installation, and the component-level repair procedures it specifically contains.
